Lady Cats Suffer 86-75 Loss to Edinboro in Sports Center

Johnstown, PA

Box Score
2483Kelsey Sleighter matched her career-high with 28 points, but Edinboro used a 23-8 run to start the second half and turn a 12-point lead into a 27-point advantage on its way to defeating the Lady Cats, 86-75, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center.  Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 9-9 overall and 6-8 in the PSAC-West.

After Sleighter's 3-pointer at the 15:34 mark of the first half gave the Lady Cats a slim 7-6 advantage, Edinboro took advantage of 14 Pitt-Johnstown turnovers and methodically began to take control on their way to building a 12-point halftime lead.

Aignee Freeland's lay-up midway through the half put the Fighting Scots up by five, before Hope Mancini's bucket at 5:49 extended it to 25-16.

Two Sleighter free-throws narrowed the gap to seven, but Edinboro pushed it into double-digits on Maggie Moore's conventional 3-point play, then to a dozen at 33-21 on Mancini's free-throws with 3:31 left.

Pitt-Johnstown followed with two Jasmine Harper baskets to cut it to eight, but the Fighting Scots scored the final four points to take a 37-25 halftime lead.

Edinboro kept the momentum and opened the second half with 23-8 run to break it wide open.  Lauren Hippo's 3-pointer extended it to 50-30, and eight straight points from Freeland capped the run and put the Fighting Scots up 60-33 with 12:49 left.

Sleighter then accounted for all 10 points in a quick 10-0 Lady Cat run to cut it to 60-43, but Moore's lay-up at 7:49 got the Edinboro lead back out to 24 at 70-46.

The Lady Cats continued to battle and cut it to 11 on Olivia Rizzo's free-throws with 11 second to play, but that was as close at Pitt-Johnstown could get.

Sleighter's 28 points, including 4-5 shooting from 3-point range and 8-8 from the free-throw line, led four Lady Cats who scored in double figures.  Nicole Carman had 15 points, while Harper added 12 points, and Rizzo finished with 10 points and five assists.  Sleighter also dished out five assists in the loss.

Carman is currently 24th on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,152 points and 15th on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Rebounding List with 625.  Harper is 26th on the all-time rebounding list with 506 rebounds, while Sleighter is 33rd on the scoring list with 1,030 points.  Sleighter also needs just seven 3-pointers to match Amy Kessler's (1988-92) career-3-point record mark of 191.

Pitt-Johnstown shot an even 52% (26-50) from the floor, 9-15 from 3-point range, and 14-18 from the free-throw line.  Edinboro, which out-rebounded Pitt-Johnstown 32-24, shot 54.1% (33-61) from the field, 5-14 from behind the 3-point line, and 15-18 from the charity stripe.

Freeland's game-high 29 points on 12-13 shooting and 8-9 from the free-throw line led the Fighting Scots.  Mancini collected 14 points, and Lindsay Laurel had a dozen points for Edinboro, which improved to 13-5 overall and 10-4 on the PSAC-West.

The Lady Cats travel to a PSAC game at Clarion on Wednesday, before returning home to host a conference doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Slippery Rock on Saturday in the Sports Center.  The Lady Cats will tip-off at 1 p.m., with the men's game to follow at 3 p.m.
