#7 West Chester Upsets #2 Lady Cats in Regional Quarters

Wheeling, W.Va.

Box Score
3151Seventh-seeded West Chester University bounced back from an opening set loss to win the next three sets and upset second-seeded Pitt-Johnstown in Thursday's Quarterfinals of the 2015 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament at the McDonough Center in Wheeling, W.Va.  Kendall Mahony had 12 kills and four blocks for the Lady Cats, whose season came to an end with a 29-7 overall record.

After dropping the first set 25-22, the Golden Rams responded with 25-16, 25-15, and 25-22 wins to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1, and advance to the Atlantic Regional Semifinals to face sixth-seeded Gannon University on Friday.

West Chester opened-up a 7-4 first-set lead on two straight Marina Sharkey kills.  Pitt-Johnstown scored the next four to regain the lead on Marissa Erminio's kills and a Golden Rams' attack error, before West Chester pushed its lead back out to three at 17-14 on Molly Grammer's kill, followed by a Lady Cat error.  Pitt-Johnstown came right back to tie it at 20 and go up 23-21 on Maura Brehl's ace.  Mahony's kill made it 24-22 and an attack error by West Chester gave the Lady Cats a 25-22 win.

However, the Golden Rams took sets two and three in convincing fashion.  West Chester used a 9-1 run early in the second set to build a 12-5 advantage, before Pitt-Johnstown cut it to 12-8 on Cambria Wierman's kill.  The Golden Rams increased it to 20-9 on one of Molly Grammer's match-high 19 kills, and closed out the 25-16 victory with a kill from Victoria Cruciano.

It was more of the same in the fourth set.  West Chester took advantage of a pair of Pitt-Johnstown errors to take a 17-11 lead.  A kill by Marissa Erminio narrowed the Lady Cat deficit to 18-13, but the Golden Rams scored seven of the last nine to earn the 25-15 win on a service ace from Allie Duffy.

Pitt-Johnstown kept it close in the third set and went up 15-12 on Mahony's ace.  West Chester answered with a 9-3 run to go back in front 21-18, before Wierman's kill evened it at 21 for the Lady Cats.  Pitt-Johnstown couldn't get over the hump.  The Golden Rams got another kill from Cruciano to take it to match-point at 24-21, and went to seal the victory, 25-23, on Samantha Agostini's kill.

Along with Mahony's 12 kills and four blocks, Pitt-Johnstown also got nine kills, three blocks, and three service aces from Brehl, and nine kills, two blocks, and six digs from Erminio.  Wierman finished with seven kills and six digs.

Jessica Dillon had a team-high 20 set assists and five digs, and Allison Mondorff tallied 17 assists and nine digs for the Lady Cats.  Devan Orr also had a team-high 11 digs.

Grammer's 19 kills led three West Chester players who had double-digit kills.  Marina Sharkey collected 15 kills, and Agostini had 12 kills for the Golden Rams, who improved to 26-10.
