Erminio Leads Volleyball to Sweep Over Gannon

3725Marissa Erminio collected a match-high 17 kills to lead the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team to its third victory this week by sweeping a PSAC match from Gannon, 25-23, 25-20, 26-24, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center.  The Lady Cats improved to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC Central Division.
 
The Lady Cats jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the opening set on two Gannon errors, before Anna Johns' kill extended it to 19-11.  The Golden Eagles answered with a 12-4 run to tie it at 23 on Becka Smith's kill, but the Lady Cats took advantage of a Gannon service and an attack error to hold on for the 25-23 win.
 
Pitt-Johnstown scored five of the first six points in the second set and got a kill from Johns and a ball handling error from the Golden Knights to increase it to 15-10.  Gannon narrowed it to 16-14, before the Lady Cats built their largest lead of the set at 22-16 on a Kendall Mahony kill and another Gannon error.  The Golden Knights made it 22-20 on a Pitt-Johnstown attack error, but two more Golden Knights' errors surrounding Erminio's kill gave the Lady Cats the 25-20 win.
 
The third set remained tight throughout.  Two consecutive attack errors by Gannon gave Pitt-Johnstown a 17-13 advantage.  The Golden Knights clawed back to regain the lead 22-21 on Smith's kill and a Lady Cat error.  However, Pitt-Johnstown broke a 24-24 tie on back-to-back attack errors on Hannah Kren to seal 26-24 win and the sweep.
 
Along with Erminio's 17 kills, Mahony added seven kills, five aces, and a block, while Johns had six kills, a block solo, and seven block assists.
 
Pitt-Johnstown also got a match-high 31 assists, seven digs and a pair of block assists from Alison Mondorff.  Devan Orr had 19 digs, and Maura Brehl tallied four kills, 12 digs, and five block assists.
 
Gannon, which slipped to 14-2, and 3-1 in the PSAC Northwest, was led by Krens' eight kills and 15 digs, and Smith's eight kills, and four block assists.  The Golden Knights also got six kills apiece from Kelsey Ansec and Lauren Beck.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to conference matches at West Chester and Cheyney on Friday and Saturday, before returning home to host a PSAC match on October 11 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
