Lady Cats drop seventh straight game, 79-75

in Johnstown, Pa.

Michelle Jahn recorded a game-high 28 points as Edinboro University avoided an upset, defeating Pitt-Johnstown 79-75 after being down 3:54 left to play Wednesday night in PSAC West Division action in the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center.
 
Jasmine Harper led the Lady Cats, who fell to 7-17 overall and 4-14 in conference play with the loss, with 16 points and five rebounds while Olivia Rizzo added 14 points. Harper's performance gives her 1,254 career points and 727 career rebounds, which puts her in 16th3131 place on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring list and sole possession of 11th place on the Lady Cat All-Time Rebounding list.
 
McCabe scored four of the Lady Cats' first six points with two layups as Pitt-Johnstown got out to a 6-2 lead after a minute and a half of play.
 
Edinboro answered with one of two free throws from Lindsey Jahn at the 7:14 first quarter mark, but the Lady Cats scored 10 straight points, which caused the Lady Scots' 29th-year head coach Stan Swank to call a timeout with 4:35 remaining in the period after McCabe hit a three pointer with an assist from Laurel O'Barto at 4:42.
 
McCabe's basket put her team ahead, 16-3 scored 11 points for Pitt-Johnstown in the first half, which led the game. Michelle Jahn broke UPJ's run with a jumper at 3:38 to cut the Lady Cats' lead to 16-5. Pitt-Johnstown scored the next four points, but the Lady Scots tighten the gap by going on a 9-0 run.
 
The run was capped off by a three-point shot from Michelle Jahn off of a steal by Lauren Hippo from McCabe, and a three-point play by Whitney Allen after being fouled by Dominique Smith to make the score, 20-14 with less than a minute to play in the period. A jumper from Harper and a layup from Rizzo gave Pitt-Johnstown a 10-point advantage to close out the quarter, 24-14.
 
The Lady Cats' remained above at least nine points until the four-minute second quarter mark when Nicole Johnson made a layup to cut the lead to seven points. This was in the midst of another nine-point run for the Lady Scots, which was capped off by a layup from Maggie Moore to put Edinboro within two points of the lead, 28-26 with 2:42 to go until halftime.
 
Pitt-Johnstown got back out an eight-point lead after three-pointers from Rizzo and DeCriscio to make the score, 34-28.
 
Edinboro was able to mount a small comeback, but Harper was able to get the half's last score with 12 seconds remaining when she made a layup with an assist from O'Barto to give the Lady Cats a 36-30 score heading into the second half.
 
Three minutes into the third quarter, Edinboro got within four points of the lead, 40-36, when Jahn made a layup to score her 12th points of the game. Pitt-Johnstown then opened up an eight-point run highlighted by a three-point play from Rizzo, helping the Lady Cats pull ahead, 48-36 with 5:23 left in the period.
 
Pitt-Johnstown kept their lead above nine points until there was 1:17 on the clock as a layup from Katie Fischer lead to an 8-2 run to close out the quarter for the Lady Scots. Jahn hit a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to put Edinboro within three points of the lead heading into the final period, 58-55.
 
O'Barto made a layup four seconds into the fourth quarter to give Pitt-Johnstown a 60-55 lead, but Edinboro scored the next six points including a three-point play by Aignee' Freeland to put the Lady Scots ahead for the first time in the game, 61-60 with 8:37 left in the game.
 
The teams traded the lead back-and-fourth once more until Rizzo hit a three-pointer with Pitt-Johnstown down 63-62 to put the Lady Cats ahead, 65-63 with a little over six minutes remaining. Edinboro fought back and tied the score at 65, 69 and 71 points as well as 73 points before Fischer completed a three-point play after being fouled by Rizzo to give the Lady Scots a 76-73 advantage with 27 seconds left to play.
 
Pitt-Johnstown head coach Mike Drahos called a timeout before Rizzo turned the ball over on a pass to McCabe, which ended up out-of-bounds, giving Edinboro possession with 21 seconds on the clock. Freeland was then fouled and made one-of-two free throw shots three seconds later.
 
The Lady Scots advanced to 17-8 overall, and 12-7 in conference play with the win over the Lady Cats.
 
The Lady Cats are to play in three straight road games, traveling to Mercyhurst University Saturday at 1 p.m., Indiana University (Pa.) Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. and Clarion University Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. before closing out the season at home against Slippery Rock University Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. All remaining games part of doubleheaders with the Mountain Cats.
