Olivia McCabe had game-highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds to help the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team turn a four-point halftime advantage into a 15-point season-opening victory over Shaw (NC) University in Saturday's First Round of the Winston-Salem State (NC) University Conference Crossover.
Pitt-Johnstown held a slim two-point lead after one quarter, before taking a 38-34 lead into the halftime break.
However, it was all Pitt-Johnstown in the third quarter. The Cats outscored Shaw, 26-10, to build a 64-44 advantage entering the final quarter.
McCabe's double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds led four Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures.
Alexis Harris had 14 points and six rebounds in her debut, while
Gabrielle Smith scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds, and
Maurina Nunn tallied 10 points.
In addition,
Tori Moreland had eight points and four rebounds, and
Nicole Olkosky chipped-in seven points and a career-high six blocks for Pitt-Johnstown.
Shaw, which also opened its season on Saturday, was led by Chlesea Long's 18 points and five rebounds. The Bears also got 16 points and six rebounds from LaQuisha Taylor, and 11 points from Emily Davis.
Pitt-Johnstown closes out the Winston-Salem State Conference Crossover on Sunday against the host score and travels to Salem International (WV) University on Wednesday. Pitt-Johnstown will then make its 2017-18 home debut with PSAC doubleheaders with the men's team against Bloomsburg University on Saturday and East Stroudsburg University on Sunday. Both doubleheaders will tip-off at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center. Between games of Saturday's doubleheader, Pitt-Johnstown will have it new Sports Center Floor Dedication Ceremony.
