Gabrielle Smith recorded a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds to help lead the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team to a 73-62 non-conference win over the Lincoln University, Tuesday evening at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center. The Mountain Cats improved to 4-2.
The Mountain Cats took an early 8-4 lead, thanks to an
Alexis Harris 3-pointer, assisted by
Alexis Hartwick. The Lions fought back to take a 23-21 lead when McKenzie Spencer knocked down a 3-pointer with under a minute left in the opening quarter, but with time running down, Smith's layup tied it at 23.
With 2:12 remaining in the second quarter, Brianna Logan took it strong to the hoop to get an easy layup to give the Lions a one-point lead, before Harris answered with a jumper for Pitt-Johnstown to give the Mountain Cats a slim, 36-35 halftime advantage.
Michelle Fitzgerald knocked down both of her free-throws with 3:43 remaining in the third quarter to put the Lions back into the lead. However, the Mountain Cats went on a quick 7-1 run, highlighted by a Hartwick 3-pointer, to go into the fourth quarter in front, 44-40.
In the fourth quarter with 6:31 left, Teira Pendleton hit a pair of free-throws to narrow the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 56-53. That was the closest the Lions would get the rest of the game. Harris gave the Mountain Cats a 63-56 lead with 3:50 remaining with a 3-pointer and Pitt-Johnstown went on to the 11-point victory.
McCabe lead the Mountain Cats with 16 rebounds while scoring 15 points.
Laurel O'Barto also got into double-digits with 12 points, while Hartwick had nine points and five rebounds, and Harris had eight points and four rebounds.
Pendleton and Fitzgerald each finished with 15 points to lead four Lincoln players who scored in double figures.
With the loss, the Lions slipped to 1-3.
Pitt-Johnstown will break for Thanksgiving, before going on the road for PSAC Crossover games at Cheyney on December 2 and at Millersville on December 3.
