Olivia McCabe's basket with 20 left on the clock put Pitt-Johnstown back on top and lifted the Cats to a 55-54 PSAC Crossover victory at Millersville University, Sunday afternoon. McCabe finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, and
Tori Moreland added 15 points for Pitt-Johnstown, which made it three straight wins and improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the PSAC Western Division.
After closing out the third quarter with a slim three-point advantage, McCabe's layup and a jumper from
Alexis Harris got Pitt-Johnstown's lead up to 53-48 with 4:20 to play, but Millersville scored the next six to regain the lead, 54-53, on two straight baskets by Hall. McCabe's bucket with 20 seconds left quickly gave the lead back to the Cats. Millersville had a chance to win it, but Bamberger's layup as time expired would not fall, and Pitt-Johnstown held on for the one-point victory.
Moreland scored eight early points, and
Gabrielle Smith hit a 3-pointer to put Pitt-Johnstown in front 13-6 just over three minutes in to game.
Millersville cut it to 15-12 on Kendra Bamberger's basket at 6:07, but Smith's bucket and two more of Moreland's 10 first quarter points gave Pitt-Johnstown a 19-14 advantage entering the second quarter.
The Marauders cut the lead to one on two occasions, including at 25-24 on Courtney Dimoff's free-throws at 5:54 of the second quarter, before two straight baskets by McCabe got Pitt-Johnstown's lead back to five at 29-24.
Millersville then closed out the half on a 10-3 run to take a 34-32 lead. Jade Farquhar's lay-up at 1:15 gave the Marauders their first lead of the day, and a pair of Alayah Hall free-throws with 41 seconds remaining ended the first half scoring.
After Farquhar's layup at the 6:35 mark of the third quarter extended the Marauders' lead to four, Pitt-Johnstown outscored Millersville 12-6 the rest of the way. Smith's layup three minutes later knotted it at 45, and Hartwick's 3-pointer at 1:15 put the Cats back in front 48-45.
Along with McCabe and Moreland, Pitt-Johnstown got 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists from Hartwick and 10 points and three rebounds from Smith.
Nicole Olkosky chipped-in eight points and three blocks foo the bench for the Cats.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 40.0% (22-55) from the floor, while holding Millersville to just 36.2% (21-58) shooting, including 0-8 from 3-point range. The Cats were 7-19 from behind the 3-point line and 4-7 from the free-throw line. The Marauders hit 12-17 from the charity stripe.
Bamberger had 16 points and six rebounds, while Hall and Farquhar each scored 14 points for Millersville, which slipped to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC Eastern Division.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to a PSAC crossover game at Lock Haven on Saturday, before returning home to host a non-conference game against Wheeling Jesuit (WV) on December 12 at 6 p.m. in the Sports Center.
