Pitt-Johnstown defeats No. 20 West Chester

4979Issac Vescovi's 33 point outburst led the Mountain Cats past the No. 20 ranked West Chester Golden Rams, 102-85 Wednesday night at the Pitt-Johnstown Sports Center. The Mountain Cats improved to 10-8 overall 8-6 in the PSAC West. West Chester fell to 15-3 and 11-3 in PSAC East.

Pitt-Johnstown took a 7-6 lead with 17:16 remaining in the first half when Dale Clancy found Issac Vescovi for a layup. From there, West Chester went on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a Matt Penecale 3-pointer to give the Golden Rams a 17-7 lead with 14:53 left in the first half.
Drew Magestro ended the scoring drought for the Mountain Cats, knocking down a mid-range jumper to make it 17-9. West Chester continued their hot shooting, increasing their lead to
29-16 when Frank Rokins hit a 3-pointer.

The Mountain Cats answered Rokins 3-pointer with a 7-0 run capped off by a pair of Vescovi free throws to make it 29-23. The Mountain Cats got the Golden Rams lead back to three points after a Clancy corner 3-pointer and a Marcin Wiszomirski layup to make it 31-28.

West Chester Increased their lead back to seven points, 40-33 on a Steve Smith 3-pointer with 3:27 remaining in the first half. The Mountain Cats answered with a 9-3 run to cut into the West Chester lead and make it 43-42 when Magestro found an open Vescovi in the post. West Chester ended the first half scoring with a pair of Jackson Hyland free throws to make it 48-45 West Chester.

After a Hyland layup to give West Chester a 52-48 lead with 17:57 left in the first half, Vescovi went on a 7-0 run himself to give the Mountain Cats a 55-52 lead. The Mountain Cats continued on their run when Magestro hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 58-52.

Pitt-Johnstown opened up a 10 point lead with 14:40 remaining in the game when Levi Masua found an open Clancy, who knocked down the open 3-pointer to make it 64-54.
West Chester got the Mountain Cats lead back down to four on a Mike Jolaoso layup with 10 minutes left. Pitt-Johnstown responded and pushed their lead back to 10 points, 82-72 with a
Wise and Clancy layup.

Pitt-Johnstown opened up 14 point lead when Clancy found Vescovi open at the top of the key, for a wide-open 3-pointer to make it, 90-76 with 6:36 remaining.
After a Rokins layup to make it 93-81, the Mountain cats went on an 8-0 run, capped off by Magestro free throws to make it 101-81.

The Mountain Cats saw five players reach double-digits scoring wise. Clancy added 19 points and 12 assists. Magestro tallied 18 points, to go with Wise's 12 points and Masua finished the night with 10.

West Chester was led in scoring by Hyland who ended the night with 18 points. Rokins added 13 Points and Tyrell Long with 12 points.

The Mountain Cats shot 62.3% from the field (38-61) and 45% (9-20) from behind the arc. Pitt-Johnstown recorded 32 assists on 38 made field goals.
 
West Chester ended the night shooting 42.6% (29-68) and 53.8% (7-13) from behind the arc.

This marked the first time the Mountain Cats have hit the century mark in points this season. The last time was on Feb. 27, 2016 in the First Round of the PSAC Tournament against Seton Hill.
The Mountain Cats will be in action Saturday afternoon against Gannon University, before traveling to Edinboro Wednesday night.
