McCabe Scores 1,000th Career Point, But Pitt-Johnstown Falls at Home to Gannon

Johnstown, PA

4903Gabrielle Smith scored 20 points and Olivia McCabe added 19 points to become Pitt-Johnstown's 37th 1,000-point scorer, but it wasn't enough, as Gannon University held off the Cats for a 76-68 PSAC victory, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center.  Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 7-6 overall and 4-4 in conference-play.

McCabe, who entered the game needing nine points to reach the milestone, finished with 19 to move into 36th-place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-time Scoring List with 1,010 points.  McCabe also ranks 13th on the All-Time Rebounding List with 696.

Gannon opened-up a quick 8-4 lead thanks on Chelsea Rourke's 3-pointer midway through the first quarter, before the Cats fought back to take a 10-8 lead on to more of McCabe's eight first half points.  The Golden Knights regain the lead by three, but Alexis Hartwick knocked down ad open jumper as time expired to cut Pitt-Johnstown's deficit to one.

4911Midway through the second quarter, Gannon went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Julia Braungart 3-pointer, to put the Golden Knights up 32-25 lead with 3:23 remaining in the half.  Pitt-Johnstown narrowed it to on at 33-32 on another bucket from Hartwick, but Maggie Mitchell's 3-pointer at the buzzer, gave the golden Knights a 41-34 lead at the break.

With 8:55 remaining in the third quarter, McCabe, who had 999 career points, got an easy layup to cut into Gannon's lead, 43-36, and become the 37th 1,000-point scorer in Pitt-Johnstown history.

Pitt-Johnstown kept it close and made it a one possession game when Smith got into the paint and laid it in. However, Gannon responded with a 7-0 run, to make it 54-45 with 4:19 remaining in the third.

Entering the final quarter down, 59-53, the Mountain Cats clawed back to within two at 63-61 on a pair of free-throws from Smith.  Gannon pushed its lead back out to nine 70-61 on Rourke's jumper. The Mountain Cats continued to fight and made it 72-67 when Maurina Nunn made both free throws with 52 seconds remaining, but Gannon closed out the final minute by forcing two Mountain Cat turnovers on its way to the eight-point victory.

Smith finished with 20 points (10-12 free-throws) and seven rebounds, and McCabe had 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown.  The Cats also got 10 points from Hartwick, and seven points and nine rebounds from Maddie Shanahan.
