Smith, Olkosky Lead Women’s Basketball to 80-65 Season-Opening Win Over Shaw at Shepherd Conference Challenge

6295Gabrielle Smith scored 23 points and Nicole Olkosky had a double-double of 18 points and 13 to lead four Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures in an 80-65 season-opening victory over Shaw (NC) University in Friday's First Round of the Shepherd (WV) University Conference Challenge.

Olkosky and Smith combined for 26 of Pitt-Johnstown's 38 first half points to help the Mountain Cats jump out to an 11-point halftime lead.

After giving up the first two baskets, Pitt-Johnstown got a conventional 3-point play from Olkosky at 5:43 of the first quarter that closed out nine straight Mountain Cats points.  Shaw cut it to 9-8 on KlinTisha Martin's layup, but Pitt-Johnstown answered right back with a 12-0 run over the next four minutes.  Alli McGrath accounted for six of the points and a two more of Olkosky 14 first half points made it 21-8.  The Bears were able to pull to within eight at 21-13 with five free-throws in the final 1:29 of the opening quarter.

Shaw kept it close and got a basket from Amani Moxley midway the second quarter to putt to within four at 27-23, but the Mountain Cats went on to outscore the Bears 11-4 the rest of the way, including buckets by Olkosky 6291and Smith down the stretch, to push the lead out to 38-27 at the break.

Pitt-Johnstown continued to build on its lead in the third quarter and got baskets from McGrath and Smith to increase it to 49-31 at the 5:30 mark.  The Bears followed with an 11-5 run to get to it down to 12 on Tahniyah Sweatt's jumper with 46 left, before Maddie Shanahan's basket with time running down put the Mountain Cats in front 56-42 entering the fourth quarter.

The Mountain Cats never let the lead get under double digits.  Sweatt's 3-pointer three minutes into the final quarter narrowed it to 11, but back-to-back 3-pointers from McGrath and one from Tori Moreland with 5:01 to play quickly gave Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of the day at 68-47.

Smith had 23 points, five rebounds, and five assists and Olkosky collected 18 points, 13 rebounds and a four steals to lead Pitt-Johnstown.  The Mountain Cats also got 16 points and five assists from McGrath, 10 points off the bench from Shanahan, and nine points from Maurina Nunn.

The Mountain cats ended the afternoon shooting 52.6% (30-57) from the floor, 3-15 from 3-point range, and 17-22 from the free-throw line.  Shaw, which held a 35-30 advantage in rebounding, shot 41.4% (24-48) from the floor.  The Bears were also 5-13 from behind the 3-point line and 12-17 from the charity stripe.

Sweatt tallied 23 points and six rebounds and Sydni Calli had 18 points and six rebounds to lead Shaw.

Pitt-Johnstown closes out the Shepherd Conference Challenge against Winston Salem State (NC) on Saturday, before traveling to a non-conference game at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday.  The Mountain Cats will make their home debut with a PSAC game against Kutztown as part of a doubleheader with the men's team on December 8 at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center.
