Gabrielle Smith followed-up her 37-point performance on Saturday with 32 more points on Sunday, but Shippensburg University erased a four-point deficit with :16 left and got an Ariel Jones' conventional 3-point-play with :05 to play, to lift the Raiders to a 69-68 PSAC win over the Pitt-Johnstown, Sunday afternoon in Shippensburg. The Mountain Cats slipped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC West.
Alli McGrath scored five early points, and Smith knocked down a 3-pointer with 3:12 left in the opening quarter to help Pitt-Johnstown jump out to a 12-4 lead. Shippensburg cut it to 14-7 late in the quarter on a Lauren Pettis free-throw.
The Mountain Cats quickly pushed the lead into double digits on its first possession of the second quarter with
Tori Moreland's 3-pointer. Another 3-pointer by Smith kept the lead at 10 at the midway point, before six straight Raiders' points, including a basket from Kryshell Gordy, made it 22-18 at 3:15. Pitt-Johnstown followed with buckets from McGrath and Smith to rebuild the lead to eight, and the Mountain Cats took a 26-20 lead into the halftime break.

Shippensburg started the second half on a 16-7 run, highlighted by 12 points from Jones, to erase the deficit and take a 3-point lead. Seven straight points from Jones evened it at 39, and Jones' layup at 5:14 gave the Raiders a 36-33 advantage. The Mountain Cats came right back to regain the lead on a pair of McGrath free-throws, and two free-throws from Smith with :18 remaining gave Pitt-Johnstown a 46-42 lead.
The Mountain Cats never trailed the rest of the way. Layup's from
Maddie Shanahan and Smith increased the lead to 54-47 with just over five minutes remaining. Shippensburg clawed back to tie it at 61 with :52 to play on Lauren Mills' free-throws. Four free-throws from Smith and a pair from Shanahan extended Pitt-Johnstown's lead to 67-63, but Jones hit another 3-pointer with :11 left to make it a one-point game. Smith then made one-of-2 from the line, but Jones's conventional 3-point play with just :05 to go give Shippensburg the one-point win.
Smith finished with a team-high 32 points, (14-15 free-throws), five rebounds and five assists, and McGrath added 20 points and five rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown. Shanahan had seven points and six rebounds for the Mountain Cats.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 42.9% (21-49) from the floor, 5-13 from 3-point range, and an impressive 21-24 from the free-throw line. Shippensburg was held to 38.7% (24-62) shooting, 4-10 from behind the arc, and 17-24 from the charity stripe.
Jones' game-high 34 points led Shippensburg, which improved to 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC East. Gordy chipped-in 15 points, and Pettis had 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the Raiders.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Salem (WV) University for a non-conference game on Wednesday, before making its 2018-19 home debut with a PSAC game against Kutztown as part of a doubleheader with the men's team on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats will also host a non-conference doubleheader against Cheyney on December 18 and a PSAC doubleheader with the men's team against Millersville on December 19.
