Olivia McCabe's 16 points led four Pitt-Johnstown double figure scorers, but Seton Hill used an 11-4 run to close out a 66-59 PSAC victory in Wednesday's 2017-18 home finale in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 9-16 overall and 6-14 in conference-play.
The Griffins jumped out to an eight-point lead on a pair of Alexandra Hay baskets, before increasing it to 20-8 with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Pitt-Johnstown got a short jumper from McCabe as time was running out to get the Cats back to within 10.
Pitt-Johnstown got right back in it and outscored Seton Hill 20-8 in the second quarter to take a two-point halftime advantage of its own at the break. The Cats used an 11-0 run to begin the quarter, capped by baskets from
Alexis Hartwick and
Gabrielle Smith, to retake the lead 21-10. After Cheyenne Trest's free-throws at 6:12 put the Griffins back up by three, Pitt-Johnstown tied it a 26 on
Tori Moreland's layup and went up 30-28 at the half on
Nicole Olkosky's bucket.
The Cats pushed it out to five at 44-39 on another Olkosky layup seven minutes into the third quarter, but Seton Hill clawed back to narrow the gap to 47-46 entering the final quarter on a pair of free-throws and a bucket in the paint from Hay.
It remained close the rest of the way. However, after McCabe's free-throws knotted it at 55 with 3:59 to play, the Griffins went on to outscore Pitt-Johnstown, 11-4. Katie Nolan's basket quickly gave the lead back to Seton Hill. Trest then connected on a 3-pointer to extend it to 62-57 with 1:21 left and the Griffins held on for the seven-point victory.
McCabe had 16 points and six rebounds, and Smith added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown. Moreland had 11 points and seven rebounds, and Olkosky rounded out the Pitt-Johnstown double figure scorers with 10 points.
McCabe currently stands in 26
th place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,155 points and seventh on the All-Time Rebounding List with 805 rebounds.
The Cats ended the night shooting 47.9% (23-48) from the floor, 3-8 from 3-point range, and 10-11 from the free-throw line. Pitt-Johnstown held Seton Hill to 42.6% (26-61) shooting, including just 5-25 from behind the 3-point arc. The Griffins were also 9-13 from the charity stripe.
Trest finished with a game-high 24 points, and Hay chipped-in 21 points for Seton Hill, which improved to 19-7 overall and 14-6 in the PSAC.
Pitt-Johnstown will close out the 2017-18 season with PSAC road games at Slippery Rock on Saturday and at Mercyhurst on February 21.
