Hartwick Scores Career-High 19, but Mercyhurst Holds Off Cats in Season Finale

4901Alexis Hartwick scored a career-high 19 points and Tori Moreland added 17 points, but Mercyhurst outscored Pitt-Johnstown 14-2 over the final 5:44 to seal a 67-59 PSAC victory in the Cats' season finale, Wednesday evening in Erie.  Pitt-Johnstown closed out the season at 10-17 overall and 7-15 in conference-play.
 
After a sluggish start by both teams, Hartwick's 3-pointer seven minutes in gave Pitt-Johnstown a five-point lead.  Mercyhurst scored the next seven to regain the lead 13-11 on Rachel Chesser's 3-pointer, but the Cats answered with 3-pointers from Hartwick and Moreland to go up 17-15.
 
Two more buckets by Hartwick from behind the arc in the first three minutes of the second quarter kept Pitt-Johnstown on top, before Amber Renz's 3-pointer capped a 7-0 spurt that broke a 25 all tie and gave the Lakers a 32-25 advantage at 2:59.  The Cats came right back with seven unanswered, including Mia Oterson's 3-pointer that tied it with 49 seconds remaining, but a short jumper from Eliza Oswalt gave Mercyhurst a slim 34-32 lead at the break.
 
4905Olivia McCabe's 3-pointer, followed by a pair of Maurina Nunn free-throws quickly got Pitt-Johnstown back in front to begin the third quarter.  The Lakers scored the next 10 to build its largest lead at 46-37 on Jamaya Shabazz's jumper at 4:18, but two baskets down the stretch from Moreland got the Cats back to within four at 46-42.
 
Pitt-Johnstown continued to claw back and retook the lead, 54-53, on Hartwick's fifth 3-pointer of the night with 6:07 to play, then extended it to four on its next possession on Moreland's 3-pointer.  However, back-to-back 3-pointers from Oswalt quickly gave Mercyhurst the lead and the Lakers never trailed again.  Mercyhurst went on to hit 7-8 free-throws in the final 46 seconds to lock up the victory.
 
Hartwick finished with 19 points on 5-7 shooting from 3-point range, and Moreland added 17 points and five assists to lead Pitt-Johnstown.  McCabe had seven points and a game-high nine rebounds in her final game at Pitt-Johnstown, and Gabrielle Smith chipped-in seven points and seven rebounds.
 
McCabe closed out her four-year career ranked into in 24th place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,173 points and is currently seventh on the All-Time Rebounding List with 823 rebounds.
 
Pitt-Johnstown wrapped-up the game shooting 39.6% (19-48) from the field, 10-20 from behind the 3-point line, and 11-12 from the free-throw line.  Mercyhurst shot 53.3% (24-45) from the floor, 7-14 from 3-point range, and 12-17 from the charity stripe.
 
Oswalt had a game-high 22 points and Emilee Norris collected 12 points and five rrebounds to help the Lakers improve to 10-17 overall and 8-13 in the PSAC.
