The Pitt-Johnstown men's and women's basketball teams will host a PSAC Western Division doubleheader against Edinboro University, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. The women will tip-off against the Fighting Scots at 1 p.m. with the men's game scheduled for 3 p.m.
Pitt-Johnstown, under sixth-year
Head Coach Mike Drahos, made it four wins in its last five games and improved to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC West following Wednesday's 68-61 victory at Gannon.
Alli McGrath scored a game-high 18 points, grabbed three rebounds, and dished out five assists to lead three Mountain Cats who scored in double figures.
Gabrielle Smith, who leads the country in free-throws attempted and made, scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, and
Alexis Hartwick had 14 points, including three 3-pointers, and six rebounds.
Tori Moreland finished with nine points for Pitt-Johnstown.
First-year
Head Coach Callie Wheeler's Edinboro Fighting Scots had their six-game winning streak snapped with a 72-70 PSAC Crossover loss at Kutztown on Wednesday. Edinboro, 9-3 overall and 5-2 in the PSAC Western Division, was led by
Ciara Rosten's 16 points and seven rebounds and
Michelle Jahn's 15 points and nine rebounds.
Michaela Barnes (14 points) and
Jontay Walton (11 points) also scored in double figures for the Fighting Scots.
Last season, the nationally-ranked Fighting Scots took a pair of games from Pitt-Johnstown. On January 8, The Fighting Scots earned a 61-56 win in Edinboro, before completing the season sweep with a 76-53 victory in the Sports Center on January 31.
Rosten's double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds led four Edinboro players who scored in double figures.
Smith had 13 points and seven rebounds, while
Nicole Olkosky and
Olivia McCabe each scored 10 points for Pitt-Johnstown.
Head Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats, ranked ninth in the D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll at 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC West, look to bounce back from a pair of tough losses. On Saturday, The Mountain Cats suffered an 86-73 setback at third-ranked Indiana (PA), before falling 64-61 at Gannon on Wednesday.
Fred Mulbah finished with a team-high 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists to pace Pitt-Johnstown, while
Josh Wise scored 10 points, and
John Paul Kromka had eight points (6-6 FTs), nine rebounds, and four blocks against the Golden Knights.
Nationally for the Mountain Cats, Kromka ranks ninth in field goal percentage (63.1%), and 12th in both total blocks (33) and blocks per game (2.4).
Edinboro has lost its last four games and comes in at 4-8 overall and 1-6 in the PSAC West under sixth-year
Head Coach Pat Cleary. After dropping a 77-73 decision at Seton Hill on Saturday, the Fighting Scots were dealt an 87-48 PSAC Crossover loss at Kutztown on Wednesday. Trey Staunch had 14 points and seven rebounds, and Jaryn Simpson added eight points and seven rebounds to lead Edinboro against the Golden Bears.
Pitt-Johnstown and Edinboro first met during the 1976-77 season and the Fighting Scots hold a 22-9 advantage in the series. Edinboro won all three meetings last season, including a 77-67 victory in the First Round of the PSAC Tournament on February 26.
Isaac Vescovi's 18 points and six rebounds, and
Wise's 15 points led four Mountain Cats who scored in double figures.
Keshwan Liggins finished with game-highs of 26 points and 12 rebounds, and
Staunch collected 22 points and nine rebounds to pace the Fighting Scots.
The Pitt-Johnstown men and women host a PSAC doubleheader against California University (PA) on Wednesday starting 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center, before going to conference games at Mercyhurst next Saturday and Slippery Rock on January 23.
