Maddie Shanahan scored a career-high 24 points, but Seton Hill raced out to an early double-digit lead and knocked down 14 3-pointers to secure an 86-64 PSAC victory over the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats slipped to 10-9 overall and 6-6 in conference-play.
The Griffins jumped out to a 9-0 lead four minutes into the opening quarter on two Courtney Cecere free-throws, before
Gabrielle Smith accounted for the first seven Pitt-Johnstown points to cut it to 11-7. After Tiana Stewart's basket increased Seton Hill's lead back out to six, Shanahan's later jumper made it 13-9.
However, the Griffins regained control and outscored Pitt-Johnstown 35-15 in the second quarter to build a 24-point halftime advantage. Megan Marecic's 3-pointer midway through the quarter gave Seton Hill a 16-point lead and a 2-pointer from Lexi Civittolo at 3:38 increased it to 38-18. Smith and
Alli McGrath each scored in the paint for Pitt-Johnstown to cut into the deficit, but Seton Hill took a 48-24 halftime lead on Katie Nolan's bucket.
Seton Hill continued to knock down shots and pushed its lead out to 29 late in the third quarter, and Madelyn Fischer's jumper with 3:53 remaining in the game gave the Griffins their largest lead of the afternoon at 83-50. The Mountain Cats closed it out on a 14-3 run, including a pair of
Alexis Hartwick 3-pointers and six points from Shanahan.
Shanahan's 17 points and five rebounds paced four Pitt-Johnstown players who scored in double figures. Smith had 16 points and McGrath finished with 12 points, while Hartwick had 11 points, a game-high nine rebounds, and four assists. For the Mountain Cats.
After a slow start shooting, Pitt-Johnstown ended the day at 42.6% (26-51). The Mountain Cats were also 5-15 from 3-point range, and 7-12 from the charity stripe. Seton Hill shot 46.4% (33-71) from the floor, including 14-32 from behind the arc. The Griffins were also 6-8 from the charity stripe.
Marecic scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Civittolo had 17 points and six rebounds for Seton Hill. The Griffins, who improved to 12-7 overall and 6-6 in the PSAC, also got 12 points and eight rebounds from Nolan, and 11 points, five rebounds, and a game-high eight assists from Cecere.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to West Chester for a PSAC Crossover game on Wednesday, before returning home to host a conference doubleheader with the men's team against Gannon next Saturday in the Sports Center. The women will tip-off against the Golden Knights at 1 p.m., with the men's game scheduled for 3 p.m.
