Gabrielle Smith Nets 1,000th Point, But Seton Hill Down’s Women’s Basketball, 74-54

6295Gabrielle Smith scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds to become Pitt-Johnstown's 38th 1,000-point scorer, but Seton Hill was able to pull away for a 74-54 PSAC victory, Thursday evening in Greensburg.  The Mountain Cats, who sit in fifth-place in the PSAC West, slipped to 12-14 overall and 8-11 in conference-play.
 
Smith, who needed three points to reach the 1,000 career-point plateau scored 14 and now stands in 37th-place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,011 points.  Smith is 24 points shy of tying Deb Deaner (1975-79) for 36th place on the scoring list.
 
Smith's basket at 6:31 of the opening quarter got her to within one point of the milestone, before her layup at the 4:33 mark made her the Pitt-Johnstown's 38th 1,000-point scorer and put the Mountain Cats in front 13-12.  Two more of Smith's eight first quarter points increased the lead to 19-15, but Seton Hill scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 21-19 lead on layups from Cheyenne Test and Tiana Stewart.
 
Megan Marecic's 3-pointer early in the second quarter increased the Griffins' lead to 27-21, before Tori Moreland hit a pair of free-throws at 6:25 to get the Mountain Cats back to within three.  Seton Hill responded with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes, capped by Marecic's fourth 3-pointer of the half, to push the lead to a dozen, and the Griffins took a 37-28 lead into the halftime break.
 
Seton Hill used a 14-2 run over the first seven minutes of the third quarter to build its lead to 51-30 on Stewart's 3-pointer.  Buckets by Nicole Olkosky and Smith got the Mountain cats back to within 17 a minute later, but the Griffins took a 55-56 lead into the final quarter.
 
After Samantha Kosmacki's 3-pointer on Seton Hill's first possession of the fourth quarter got the lead out to 22, Pitt-Johnstown answered with an 11-2 run to narrow the gap to 60-48 on a Maurina Nunn layup and free-throw with 5:09 to play. However, the Griffins scored the next eight points and went on to the 20-point win.
 
Along with Smith, Alli McGrath had 14 points and six rebounds, and Moreland finished with nine points and six rebounds for Pitt-Johnstown.  The Mountain cats also got six points and a game-high 11 rebounds from Olkosky.
 
The Mountain Cats were held to 33.9% (21-62) shooting, including 3-14 from 3-point range.  Seton Hill shot 36.4% (24-66), but hit 12-29 from behind the arc.  The Mountain Cats were 9-14 from the free-throw line, while the Griffins shot 14-20 from the charity stripe.
 
Marecic's game-high 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and nine rebounds paced four Griffins who scored in double figures.  Courtney Cecere had 13 points, Nolan had 12 points and seven rebounds, and Trest collected 10 points for Seton Hill, which improved to 16-10 overall and 11-9 in the PSAC.
 
Pitt-Johnstown will celebrate Senior Day with a PSAC doubleheader with the men's team against Slippery Rock on Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Sports Center, before wrapping-up the regular season with another home doubleheader with the men's team on Wednesday against Mercyhurst.
