Bob Rukavina's fourth-seeded Pitt-Johnstown men's basketball team advances to the PSAC Quarterfinals to take top-seeded Indiana (PA) on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Kovalchick Complex.
Wednesday's winner secures a spot in the PSAC Semifinals on Saturday at the highest-seeded remaining Western Division school. The 2019 PSAC Championship game is scheduled for Sunday.
The Mountain Cats made it four wins in their last five games and raised their record to 17-12 following a 70-60 victory over fifth-seeded Gannon in Monday's First Round of the PSC Tournament.
Josh Wise scored a game-high 19 points, including 12 in the first half to help Pitt-Johnstown built a 22-point halftime lead.
Fred Mulbah had 12 points and a game-high six assists, and
Caiden Landis scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds. Pitt-Johnstown also got nine points and five rebounds from
John Paul Kromka and seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds off the bench from
Olando King, Jr.
Wise currently stands in 20
th-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,159 career points. He is now 15 points shy of Tyrone Doleman (1986-88) for 19
th-place on the scoring list.
Wise's 17.7 points and 5.8 rebounds pace four Mountain Cats who average double figures in scoring. Kromka is second in scoring (15.0 ppg.) and leads the team in rebounding (7.8 rpg.), while Mulbah is averaging 10.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and a team-high 5.1 assists per game. Landis rounds out the double figure scorers at 10.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.
Indiana (PA), the No. 1-seed in the PSAC Western Division and the No. 2-ranked team in NCAA Division II, won its final seven games and enters Wednesday's game at 26-2. The Crimson Hawks closed out the regular season with a 72-59 win over Seton Hill on Saturday. Donte Lombardi scored a game-high 27 points and Jacobo Diaz added 20 points for IUP.
Diaz leads the Crimson Hawks in both scoring (18.9 ppg.) and rebounding, while Lombardi is averaging 16.8 points and 5.5 assists per game, and Malik Miller is averaging 16.8 points per game.
Pitt-Johnstown and IUP have met 61 times since the 1970-71 season, and the Crimson Hawks hold a 44-17 advantage in the series. IUP earned a pair of victories over the Mountain Cats this year. On January 5, Miller scored a game-high 25 points and Willem Brandwijk had 21 points and nine rebounds in the Crimson Hawks' 86-73 win in Indiana. Kromka's 20 points and Wise's 14 points led four Pitt-Johnstown double-figure scorers. IUP completed the season sweep with an 80-67 victory in the sports Center on February 13 behind Diaz's 23 points and Lombardi's 22 points. Wise scored a game-high 24 points for the Mountain Cats.
