No. 19 Wrestlers Pin Down No. 8 Ashland, 21-15, in Sports Center

Johnstown, PA

Pitt-Johnstown fell behind early, but used four straight wins, including Dillon Keane's decision over No. 9 Drew Wiechers at 165 lbs., and No. 8 Brock Biddle's pin at 174 lbs. to down eighth-ranked Ashland (OH) University, Friday night in the Sports Center.

The Mountain Cats, 3-0 on the season, made it 38 consecutive home wins and knocked off their second top-10-ranked opponent of the season.  Pitt-Johnstown also dealt fifth-ranked West Liberty (WV) a 23-14 loss to open the season on November 14.

After a forfeit at 125 lbs. gave Ashland an early 6-0 advantage, Pitt-Johnstown's Mason Myers used a second period takedown to regain the lead on his way to a 7-4 victory over Tyler Masters at 133 lbs.

The Eagles quickly got the lead out to 9-3 at 141 lbs. with Justin Wilcox's 9-6 decision over Caleb Morris, but fifth-ranked Jacob Ealy got a takedown as time expired in the second period and held off ninth-ranked Carson Speelman, 5-3, at 149 lbs., to cut the Mountain Cat deficit to 9-6.

Biddle_Brock.jpgA 7-5 win by Nate Smith over Chance Esmont at 157 lbs. evened the match at nine, before Pitt-Johnstown took its first lead of the night at 12-9.  At 165 lbs., Keane took advantage of a point for riding time to knot it at seven and force overtime.  Keane then got a takedown :47 into the extra period to upset ninth-ranked Drew Wiechers.

The Mountain Cats kept it going at 174 lbs. with Biddle's fall at 4:49 over Corbin May that pushed it out to 18-9.

Seventh-ranked Adian Pasiuk's 15-8 decision win over Pitt-Johnstown's Will Small at 184 lbs. and a 4-3 overtime win from Walker Uhl over Dakoda Rodgers at 197 lbs. got the Eagles back to withing three at 18-15 with one bout remaining.

However, Isaiah Vance sealed Pitt-Johnstown's 21-15 victory with an 8-3 decision over Ty Petrey in the 285-lb. bout.

With the loss, Ashland slipped to 2-2 on the season.

Pitt-Johnstown travels to the 2021 Midwest Classic in Indianapolis on Dec. 18-19 before breaking for the holiday season.  The Mountain Cats will then compete at the Kutztown Duals on January 8, before hosting Seton Hill for a PSAC match on January 14 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
