Unbeaten Shepherd (W.Va.) University outscored the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team 30-13Â in the decisive third quarter en route to a 71-51 PSAC victory Tuesday night at the Sports Center.
Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC. Guard Peyton Alazaus led the Mountain Cats with 10 points in the crossover game, while forward Ashley Norling added nine.Â
Molly Wagoner, a 6-foot-2 freshman, had a career-high 16 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive end, after pulling down 13 boards the previous game against Salem (W.Va.) University.
Guard Marley McLaughlin (22 points), forward Sydney Clayton (18) and guard Abby Beeman (15) combined for 55 points for the Rams, who improved to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the PSAC. McLaughlin surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her career, ending the night with 1,020.Â
Shepherd, ranked No. 3 in the latest D2SIDA Atlantic Region poll, trailed by as many as seven points in the second quarter and led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter.Â
Forward Kylah Franklin's two free throws with 2:51 left in the second quarter gave the Mountain Cats their biggest lead at 26-17, but they were outscored 8-0 the rest of the way and trailed 27-26 at halftime. Â
Pitt-Johnstown, which has dropped five of its past six games, shot 24.2 percent (16 of 66) from the floor with a 31.5 percent effort (5 of 16) from 3-point range. The Mountain Cats connected on 87.5 percent (14 of 16) of their free throws.
Shepherd hit on 51.9 percent (28 of 54) from the field and 20.1 percent (3 of 15) from behind the arc. The Rams made 75 percent (12 of 16) of their free throws.Â
The Rams lead the all-time series, 9-7. Shepherd had a 22-7 advantage in fast-break points and outscored the Mountain Cats 42-20 in the paint.Â
The Pitt-Johnstown women will close out the first semester with a pair of PSAC games Saturday against Shippensburg and Sunday against Lock Haven, both at 1 p.m. The men follow at 3 p.m. each day in the crossover doubleheaders at the Sports Center.
