Guard Destiny Jefferson and forward Aunbrielle Green combined for 43 points Saturday as Shippensburg University beat Pitt-Johnstown, 69-61, in PSAC action at the Sports Center.
The Mountain Cats, who battled foul problems, tied the game at 51-51 at the 8:21 mark of the fourth quarter on forward Ashley Norling's layup.Â
But Green countered with a layup a short time later and the Raiders never trailed again in the PSAC crossover game, outscoring the Mountain Cats 18-10 over the final eight minutes.Â
Pitt-Johnstown (3-7 overall, 1-3 PSAC) suffered its third consecutive loss, while Shippensburg (7-3, 3-1 PSAC) won for the fifth time in six games.
Jefferson finished with a game-high 23 points for the Raiders and Green had 20 points and 12 rebounds. Â
Guard Peyton Alazaus led the Mountain Cats with 22 points. Norling contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, and guard Olivia Fasick had seven points, seven assists and four steals.Â
Pitt-Johnstown, coached by Mike Drahos, shot 32.3 percent (20 of 62) from the floor and 25 percent (5 of 20) from 3-point range. Shippensburg hit on 40 percent (20 of 50) of its shots and 16.7 percent (1 of 6) from behind the arc.Â
The Raiders connected on 73.7 percent (28 of 38) of their free throws and the Mountain Cats converted 76.2 percent (16 of 21). Shippensburg also had a 49-31 rebounding advantage. Â
In the third quarter, the lead see-sawed back and forth, with six ties, but the Raiders took a 51-49 lead on Jefferson's layup with 19 seconds left.
Guard Kendyl McKissock's layup two minutes into the second quarter pushed the Mountain Cats' lead to four points, 20-16. The Raiders went on a 15-5 run over the four-plus minutes to seize a 31-25 advantage.Â
But Pitt-Johnstown, which continues to play without injured guard/forward Cassidy Crawford. got two free throws from Alazaus and a layup from Madeline Cecere to pull within two points at halftime, 31-29. Alazaus had 11 points in the first half, connecting on three 3-pointers.
In the first quarter, the Mountain Cats trailed 7-0 early on, but were able to overcome the deficit to grab a 15-14 lead after one quarter.
Pitt-Johnstown returns to PSAC play Sunday with a 1 p.m. crossover game against Lock Haven at the Sports Center. The men follow at 3 p.m.
