The Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday, knocking off Lock Haven University 62-58 in its final PSAC game of the first semester.
Guard Olivia Fasick made two free throws with five seconds left, sealing the Mountain Cats' victory over the Bald Eagles at the Sports Center.
Lock Haven had pulled within two points, 60-58, on guard Carly Fitzsimmons' layup with 10 seconds remaining.
Fasick, a redshirt sophomore, had 10 of her team-high 17 points in the second half of the PSAC crossover game as Pitt-Johnstown improved to 4-7 overall, 2-3 in the league. She made all six free throws attempts, contributed eight assists and added five rebounds.Â
Forward Ashley Norling scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half. She finished 6 of 11 shooting and added seven rebounds and five assists. Guard Peyton Alazaus had 12 points, hitting 4 of 7 attempts from 3-point range.Â
Guard Brooke Lawyer had a game-high 19 points for the Bald Eagles, who dropped to 4-3 overall, 1-3 in the PSAC. Center Jaynelle Robinson netted 12 points and Fitzsimmons added 11.
Pitt-Johnstown, coached by Mike Drahos, shot 46.8 percent (22 of 47) from the floor and 40 percent (8 of 20) from 3-point range. Lock Haven hit on 35.8 percent (19 of 53) of its shots and 25 percent (4 of 16) from behind the arc.Â
The Mountain Cats converted 76.9 percent (10 of 13) from the free throw line, while the Bald Eagles hit just 64 percent (16 of 25).Â
Forward Kylah Franklin's layup with 2:17 remaining stretched the Mountain Cats' lead to 47-35, its largest of the game, in the third quarter.Â
Norling helped lead Pitt-Johnstown to a 31-28 lead in the opening half. She made 5 of 8 shots from the field and the Mountain Cats shot 54.5 percent overall, making 12 of 22 attempts, including three 3-pointers. Fasick also contributed to the cause with seven points and four assists. Lawyer led all scorers with 13 first-half points.
Alazaus sank a 3-pointer at the 8:43 mark of the second quarter. It capped a 14-2 run for the Mountain Cats and lifted them from a six-point deficit to a 20-14 advantage during a span of a little more than four minutes.
Pitt-Johnstown fell behind 6-0 early but battled back to take a 15-14 lead after the first quarter.
Guard Makalyn Clapper's steal led to Fasick being fouled, and she hit both free throws to give the Mountain Cats their first lead with 42 seconds remaining.
The Pitt-Johnstown women will break for the holidays before starting PSAC West Division play Jan. 5 at Slippery Rock.Â
