Forward Ashley Norling tied her career-high with 21 points and Pitt-Johnstown earned its first win of the new year with a 70-59 victory over Edinboro University Monday afternoon in a PSAC West matchup at the Sports Center.
Norling, who added seven rebounds, fouled out with a little over two minutes remaining. She hit 8 of 13 shots from the floor and all five free throws in 26 minutes for the Mountain Cats (5-9 overall, 3-5 PSAC), who outscored the Fighting Scots 23-10 in the fourth quarter.
Norling previously scored 21 points against Clarion University on Feb, 15, 2020.
Pitt-Johnstown forward Makalyn Clapper had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and guards Olivia Fasick and Hayden Taylor added 10 points each for coach Mike Drahos' team.
Forward Gillian Fisher topped the Fighting Scots (6-4, 4-3 PSAC) with a game-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers. Guard/forward Ashten Boggs had 15 points and forward Bella Burrelli pulled down 10 rebounds for Edinboro, which leads the all-time series 14-4..
Pitt-Johnstown shot 48.9% (23 of 47) from the field and 26.6% (4 of 15) from 3-point range. Edinboro made 31.1% (19 of 61) of its shots and 34.8% (8 of 23) from behind the arc. The Mountain Cats held a 34-16 advantage in points in the paint.
The Fighting Scots led by as many as eight points midway through the third quarter. Forward Kylah Franklin made a free throw for Pitt-Johnstown to tie it at 47-47 with 14 seconds left, but Boggs sank two free throws with three seconds remaining, giving the Fighting Scots a 49-47 advantage after three quarters.
Pitt-Johnstown trailed 16-14 after the first quarter and fell behind by 10 points early in the second. But the Mountain Cats outscored the Fighting Scots 18-4 over the final 4:29 to take a 32-28 lead at halftime.
Norling had a strong first half, hitting 5 of 8 shots, including two free throws, for 12 points. Franklin ended a 10-0 Edinboro run with a layup at the 4:29 mark of the second quarter.
Franklin's shot sparked the Pitt-Johnstown scoring surge, which included eight points from Norling in the final 3:23. The Mountain Cats hit 7 of 15 shots in the second quarter, when they outscored Edinboro 18-12.
Pitt-Johnstown returns to PSAC play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday with a crossover game at Mansfield University.
