Clapper’s Late Basket, Defense Help Pitt-Johnstown Upset No. 17 IUP in PSAC West Matchup

Clapper_Makalyn.jpgGuard Makalyn Clapper scored the go-ahead basket on a layup with a minute left and came up with a game-clinching steal in the final seconds as the Pitt-Johnstown women defeated No. 17 Indiana (Pa.) 63-60 in a PSAC West matchup Monday night at the Sports Center.

Forward Molly Wagoner also had a key block and took a charge call in the final 30 seconds as the Mountain Cats (7-10, 5-6 PSAC) made it three wins in their last four outings.

Clapper was one of four players in double figures for Pitt-Johnstown, coached by Mike Drahos. She finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with five steals. She made 5 of 9 shots, including two 3-pointers.

Guards Peyton Alazaus and Olivia Fasick and forward Ashley Norling had 12 points each, while Wagoner grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds for the Mountain Cats, who have won three of their past four games.

Guard Rajah Fink had 17 points to lead the Crimson Hawks (11-4, 5-4 PSAC), ranked No. 17 in the WBCA Coaches Top 25 poll. Guard Kiera Baughman and forward Maura D'Anna had 10 points each.

The Mountain Cats shot 40.4% (23 of 57) from the floor and 42.1% (8 of 19) from 3-point range, while the Crimson Hawks hit 41.8% (23 of 55) of their shots and 33.3% (3 of 9) from behind the arc and lost for the third time in four games.

Pitt-Johnstown, which led 14-12 after one quarter, got off to a hot start and built a 24-19 lead at the 5:34 mark of the second quarter. IUP went on a 7-0 run to go up by two on a basket by D'Anna with a little over three minutes left and took a 31-25 halftime advantage.

The Crimson Hawks led by as many as eight points, 37-29, at the 7:34 mark of the third quarter, but the Mountain Cats stormed back with a 15-6 run the rest of the way to take a 44-43 lead. A 3-pointer by Clapper gave Pitt-Johnstown the lead with 1:44 left and the Mountain Cats used Wagoner's block and Clapper's steal to seal the win over the Crimson Hawks.

Wagoner had a team-high seven rebounds in the first half while Clapper had six points and five boards.

The Mountain Cats, held a six-point lead two minutes into the second period on back-to-back 3-pointers by guards Cassidy Crawford and Olivia Fasick.
