Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to leads in both games and got strong starting pitching from
Rodney Shultz and
Taylor Squiric on its way to a 6-2 and 7-6 sweep over West Liberty (WV) to open a four-game non-conference series in Mason, OH on Saturday. The Mountain Cats improved to 4-3-1 on the year.
In the opener, the Mountain Cats ran out to a 6-0 sixth inning lead and coasted to the 6-2 win.
Shultz tossed the first 5.2 innings and limited the Hilltoppers one run on six hits, while striking out eight and walking three to even his record at 1-1.
Brando Souders pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits. Souders fanned two and didn't give up a walk.
Asher Corl had two hits and two RBI, and
Tyler Smith added two hits for Pitt-Johnstown.
Mario Disso doubled and drove in one, while
Chase Vargo and
Jake Ansell each had a hit and an RBI.

In the nightcap, the Mountain Cats built a 5-0 lead in the second inning and went on to held off West Liberty, 7-6, to complete the sweep.
Squiric raised his record to 2-0 after holding the Hilltoppers to three runs on five hits over the first six-plus innings. Squiric struck out eight and walked three.
Dylan Broderick was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and two runs, and
Lennox Pugh doubled and drove in one.
Josh Ulery,
Josh Reynolds,
Alex Glumac, and
Garrett Prosper all collected a hit and an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown.
West Liberty fell to 0-10.
Pitt-Johnstown concludes the four-game series against the Hilltoppers with a doubleheader on Sunday, before traveling to East Stroudsburg for a four-game, non-conference series next weekend. The Mountain Cats are scheduled to make their 2022 home debut with a non-conference doubleheader against Salem (WV) on March 19 at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium.
