The Pitt-Johnstown men's and women's basketball teams will wrap-out their regular season home schedules with a PSAC Western Division doubleheader against California (PA), Wednesday evening in the Sports Center. The women' will kick-off the doubleheader at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
Head Coach Mike Drahos (10
th year) and the Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats will close out the regular season home schedule with a key PSAC West match-up against California (PA). The Mountain Cats are in a tie for third-place in the PSAC Western Division standings with California (PA) and Edinboro, just a half game behind second-place IUP. The Mountain Cats, 15-11 overall and 12-8 in conference games, are coming off of a lopsided, 80-53, Senior Day victory over Edinboro, Saturday in the Sports Center.
Peyton Alazaus scored a game-high 22 points, and
Ashley Norling added 16 points, a game-high 14 rebounds. and eight assists. Pitt-Johnstown also got 17 points from
Hayden Taylor.
California (PA), tied with the Mountain Cats for third-place in the conference standings at 16-10 overall and 12-8 in the PSAC West under 12
th-year
Head Coach Jess Strom, is coming off of its bye. Prior to that, the Vulcans earned a 68-66 home win over Seton Hill last Wednesday behind a game-high 23 points and six rebounds from
Rajah Fink, and 10 points and 11 rebounds points from
Allycia Harris. California (PA) also suffered a 57-46 loss at Mercyhurst on Feb. 11.
The Mountain Cats and Vulcans met in California on Jan. 28, and California (PA) came away with a, 67-58, victory.
Norling collected a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, while
Taylor had 11 points and
Cassidy Crawford added nine points to lead Pitt-Johnstown. Herrington's 18 points and Harris' 15 points and nine boards paced four Vulcans who scored in double figures.
Head Coach Bob Rukavina's (34
th-year) Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats, 19-7 overall and in third-place in the PSAC West standings at 15-5 in celebrated Senior Day with a 90-66 victory over Edinboro, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center.
Jared Jakubick scored 18 points and
Joe Batt added 14 points to become Pitt-Johnstown's 34
th 1,000-point scorer to pace five Mountain Cat double figure scorers. Pitt-Johnstown also got 13 points from
Drew Magestro, a dozen points and seven rebounds from
John Paul Kromka, and 10 points from
Ryan Smith.
Kromka, Pitt-Johnstown's all-time leader in blocks with 308, ranks third on the Mountain Cat All-time Scoring List (1,853 points), third on the all-time rebounding list (906 rebounds), and 15
th on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time List. (293 assists).
Magestro is currently seventh on the Mountain Cat all-time 3-point field goals list with 188, and
Batt stands in 33
rd-place on the scoring list with 1,009 points.
California (PA). under fifth-year
Head Coach Danny Sancomb, increased its win streak to five straight games and improved to 14-12 overall and 11-9 in the PSAC following last Wednesday's, 80-68, victory over Seton Hill.
Jermaine Hall, Jr. had 19 points and five rebounds,
KJ McClurg scored 16 points, and
Cam Polak and
Donald Whitehead, Jr. each netted 14 points for the Vulcans. California (PA) also earned a 76-71 win over 20th-ranked Mercyhurst on Feb. 11.
The Mountain Cats hold a 16-7 advantage in the series since the 2006-07 season. Pitt-Johnstown has also won seven of the last eight meetings, including a 76-71 victory in California on Jan. 28. Kromka scored a career-high 31 points and had 12 rebounds, while
Andrew Shull and
Jakubick scored 14 and 13 points, respectively for the Mountain Cats.
Keith Palek, III and Hall scored 19 points apiece, and McClurg chipped-in 14 points for the Vulcans.
Both Pitt-Johnstown teams will wrap-up the 2022-23 regular season with a PSAC game at Slippery Rock on Saturday, before opening the 2023 PSAC Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments on Monday or next Wednesday.
