A 5-over par in the final round paved the way to a 31-over par 895 and a runner-up finish for the Pitt-Johnstown men's golf program at the PSAC Men's Golf Championships at Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon. It was by far the best showing the Mountain Cats have enjoyed at the event since joining the conference in 2013.
Gannon made history by claiming its first team title in program history following a 9-under par performance. Golden Knights' sophomore Mattia Parrini fired an 8-under 208 to edge teammate Giovanni Delorenzi by five strokes and capture individual title honors.
The Mountain Cats were in third place at the conclusion of the first and second rounds before moving up a spot and seeing four players finish tied for 16th or better by the end of Sunday. Freshman Lucas Smith was on target all weekend, shooting 2-over par to move up three spots from the previous day and secure sole possession of fifth place in the 43-player field.
Eli Ropietski shot a two-over 74 in round three and finished 11th at 9-under par. Senior Justin Scally and freshman Jake Morgan each fired a 14-over par to tie two others from Millersville for 16th place. Mario Battaglia and Mauricio Hernandez each competed in the event, but did not factor into the end result.
The Mountain Cats had an average score of 4.52 on par-5 holes, which easily paced the nine-team field. Pitt-Johnstown also racked up six eagles, three more than the next closest team.
The fall season was easily among the most productive in team history and featured four top-five performances and a sixth place finish in the Mountain Cats' first home invitational on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at Sunnehanna Country Club.
