A lackluster end to the first half sunk Pitt-Johnstown in an 80-65 setback to Shepherd on Saturday afternoon in Shepherdstown.
The Mountain Cats wrapped up their PSAC crossover games and sit at 7-6 (3-3 PSAC).
Despite the loss, Ryan Smith enjoyed a memorable afternoon when he became the 35th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 points in a career on a jumper at the 15:34 mark of the second half. The senior from Harrisburg led all scorers with a season-high 28 points, 19 coming in the second half, while shooting 11-of-19 from the field. It was the ninth time in 13 games that Smith reached double-figures in scoring.
Baden Forup added 15 points and six rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. Sean Dillon and Nick Watts provided six points apiece.
Watts scored on a layup with 7:45 to play in the first half that put the Mountain Cats on top 23-21. It was the last time they found themselves in control.
Pitt-Johnstown fell into a 12-point deficit in the final 30 seconds of the half, but sophomore Vinnie Cugini's layup as time expired cut it to 39-29 heading into the locker room. The Mountain Cats whittled it down to 45-39 about five minutes into the second half courtesy of a jumper from Dillon, but it didn't get any closer over the final 15 minutes.
Marcus Banks totaled a team-high 19 points for the Rams, who moved to 8-4 (4-1 PSAC).
The Mountain Cats open up PSAC West play after an extended holiday break with a visit to Slippery Rock on Monday, Jan. 6 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
