No. 11 Wrestlers Edge Gannon to Clinch at Least a Share of Eighth Straight PSAC Title

Erie, PA

2/10/2024 6:21:00 PM

Fifth-ranked Dakoda Rodgers (197 lbs.) and third-ranked Isaiah Vance (285 lbs.) each won by decision in the final two bouts of the match to erase a four-point Mountain Cat deficit and lift the 11th-ranked Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers to a 17-15 PSAC victory at Gannon on Saturday.  In the process, Pitt-Johnstown, winners of nine straight matches, clinched at least a share of its eighth consecutive PSAC crown and improved to 14-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

A victory in Friday's regular season finale against Shippensburg would give the Mountain Cats the outright PSAC title.

Gannon jumped out to a 6-0 lead with decision wins in the first two bouts.  At 125 lbs., 10th-ranked Jose Diaz held off Trevon Gray, 6-5, and No. 8 Jerry Echevarria defeated Byron Daubert, 5-0, at 133 lbs.

Pitt-Johnstown answered with three straight wins of its own.  After Mason Myers won an 10-0 major decision over Caleb Chaves at 141 lbs., and third-ranked Jacob Ealy dealt James Ryan an 11-1 major decision loss at 149 lbs.  Cooper Warshel then followed with a, 5-0, shutout over Ethan Richner at 157 lbs. to give the Mountain Cats an 11-5 advantage.

The Golden Knights came right back with wins at 165, 174, and 184 lbs. to regain the lead.  Nick Coreno, ranked 11th at 165 lbs., defeated Dillon Keane, 5-2, before Cole Hivnor and Cole Casilio each won by decision to put Gannon back on top, 15-11.

The Mountain Cats needed wins in the final two bouts to keep their PSAC championship streak alive…and that's exactly what happened.  At 197 lbs., Rodgers earned a 4-1 win over Andrija Ivanovic to cut the deficit to one, and Vance completed the comeback with a 6-4 decision over Matt Long at 285 lbs. that carried Pitt-Johnstown to the two-point victory.

With the loss, Gannon slipped to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the PSAC.

Pitt-Johnstown will celebrate Senior Night and close out the regular season with a conference match against Shippensburg on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center, before competing in the 2024 Super Region I Tournament at Kutztown on March 2.
