Mountain Cats’ Late Charge Comes Up Just Short in Narrow Loss at IUP

Fasick, OliviaCrawford, CassidyOlivia Fasick and Cassidy Crawford combined for 33 points and seven 3-pointers to help Pitt-Johnstown cut into a 12-point fourth quarter deficit, but Indiana (PA) hit all eight of its free-throws down the stretch to hold off the Mountain Cats, 69-63, Wednesday evening in Indiana.  Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 14-10 overall and 9-9 in the PSAC.
 
Fasick went 5-9 from behind the arc and finished with 17 points and four assists, while Crawford added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds to pace the Mountain Cats.  Hayden Taylor scored a dozen points, and Kylah Franklin and Riley Childress tallied eight and five points respectively.
 
Pitt-Johnstown bounced back from an early seven-point deficit with a 9-0 run, capped by a Childress jumper in the paint and Taylor's layup, to go in front with 3:39 to go in the first quarter.  IUP tied it, then got a late 3-pointer from Janiera Scott to score the final five points and take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.
 
Rahmena Henderson pushed the Crimson Hawks' lead out to 18-11 to a minute into the second quarter, but the Mountain Cats responded again.  This time, Pitt-Johnstown outscored IUP, 13-2 over the Taylor, HaydenFranklin, Kylahnext five minutes, to regain the lead, 24-20, on three of Crawford's 12 first half points, and a 3-pointer from Fasick.  The Mountain Cats still held a slim two-point advantage, but Kiera Baughman's jumper at 1:15 knotted it at 27 at the half.
 
IUP came out hot and scored seven unanswered points to start the second half to climb out to a 34-27 lead on back-to-back buckets from Nyshae' Weaver.  Another basket from Crawford narrowed it to five, before Maria Cerro's layup at the 1:47 mark moved it into double digits to help give the Crimson Hawks a 46-37 lead after three quarters.
 
Pitt-Johnstown cut it o seven two minutes into the final quarter on Camille Dominick's layup, but IUP was able to extend it to 12 with 6:43 to play.  The Mountain Cats didn't go away and used a pair of Fasick 3-pointers and Franklin's jumper at :55 to make it 61-57.  However, Pitt-Johnstown wasn't able to complete the comeback.
 
The Mountain Cats hit nine 3-pointers, but were held to 39.7% (23-58) shooting for the game, while IUP shot 49.1% (26-53), but just 5-17 from 3-point range.  The Mountain Cats were 8-10 from the line and the Crimson Hawks made all 12 of their free-throw attempts.
 
Weaver posted game-highs of 28 points on 12-14 shooting and 13 rebounds, and Kiera Baughman and Henderson each scored 13 points for the Crimson Hawks, now 17-5 overall and 13-4 in the PSAC.
 
Pitt-Johnstown visits Slippery Rock for a PSAC game on Saturday, before returning home to host a conference doubleheader with the men's team against California (PA) on Feb. 21 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
