No. 11 Mountain Cats Win Final Seven Bouts to Secure 31-9 PSAC Win at Mercyhurst

After falling behind 9-4 after the first three matches, the 11th-ranked Pitt-Johnstown wrestlers answered to win the final seven bouts, including Dillon Keane's convincing, 10-4, win over sixth-ranked Dillon Walker at 165 lbs., to claim a 31-9 PSAC victory at Mercyhurst, Friday night.  The Mountain Cats made it eight straight wins and improved to 13-2 overall and remained unbeaten in the PSAC at 5-0.
 
A 14-3 major decision win by Trevon Gray over Billy Smith to begin the match at 125 lbs. gave he Mountain Cats the early advantage, but at 133 lbs., Mercyhurst's Nate Knowlton pinned Byron Daubert at 2:05 at 133 lbs. and Jake Niffenegger defeated Mason Myers, 7-1, at 141 lbs. to put the Lakers on top, 9-4.
 
Third-ranked Jacob Ealy quickly gave the lead back to Pitt-Johnstown when he pinned Bret Minnick at 2:30 in the 149-lb bout, before Cooper Warshel took down Max Stedeford :53 into overtime to lock up a 12-9 win and make it 13-9 in favor of the Mountain Cats.
 
Pitt-Johnstown kept the momentum.  At 165 lbs., Keane climbed out to a four-point lead after two periods and went on to defeat sixth-ranked Walker, 10-4, and Tony Salopek followed with a 5-3 win over Chase Stein at 174 lbs. to increase it to 19-9.
 
The Mountain Cats locked up the victory at 184 lbs. when Noah Gnibus took down Vinny Scaramuzzino just over a minute into overtime to secure a 4-1 win put build the lead to 22-9.
 
Pitt-Johnstown kept it going when fifth-ranked Dakoda Rodgers used a riding time point to defeat Trever Begin, 2-1, at 184 lbs., and third-ranked Isaiah Vance pinned Christian Taylor at 1:09 in the bout at 285 lbs. to record his 14th fall of the season and set the final score at 31-9.
 
With the loss, Mercyhurst dropped to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to a PSAC match at Gannon on Saturday afternoon, before returning home to celebrate Senior Night and close out the regular season with a conference match against Shippensburg on Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Sports Center.
