Pitt-Johnstown's season came to a close with a 77-62 loss to Seton Hill on Wednesday night at the McKenna Center.
The Mountain Cats concluded the 2024-25 campaign with an 11-16 overall record (7-13 PSAC). The win for Seton Hill combined with IUP's upset over California (Pa.) gave those two teams the remaining spots in the upcoming PSAC Tournament and eliminated Pitt-Johnstown.
Sophomore Baden Forup capped a breakout season with a team-high 17 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Senior guard and leading-scorer Ryan Smith, who eclipsed 1,000 career points back in December, finished off a stellar career with 12 points.
Freshman Jay Rose contributed 12 points, two rebounds and two steals, while Adam Bilinsky provided six points and five boards.
Neither team managed to pull away over the first 10 minutes. The Mountain Cats were down 14-13 before a 7-0 burst polished off by a layup from Nick Watts swung it to 20-14, which marked the largest lead of the half.
Oddly enough, Pitt-Johnstown missed four of its first five shots in the opening three-plus minutes before going a staggering 17-for-24 (71%) from the floor over the final 16 minutes. That excellent shooting performance in the first half propelled the Mountain Cats to a narrow 39-35 advantage at the break.
Smith's jumper afforded the Mountain Cats an 8-point edge less than a minute into the half. They were up six with 13:30 remaining, but that advantage faded away when Seton Hill began to heat up.Â
Watts tied it at 58-all with about eight minutes to play, but two possessions later, the Griffins grabbed the lead for good on a layup from Gabe Gillespie.
The Mountain Cats, who finished 45.9% from the floor, quickly found themselves in a 73-61 deficit with less than two minutes left that proved insurmountable.
Ryan Meis recorded a game-high 22 points for the Griffins, who moved to 15-12 (8-11 PSAC).
Pitt-Johnstown will graduate four seniors in Smith, Elijah Sechler, Sean Dillon and Tyler Bilinsky.
