BEDFORD, Pa. — Sophomore Lucas Smith enjoyed an even-par 72 and sits tied for fourth with three others after day one of Pitt-Johnstown's Bedford Springs Intercollegiate on Monday at Omni Bedford Springs Resort.
The Mountain Cats shot a 19-over par 307 to reside in 11th place out of 15 teams after the first 18 holes.
West Liberty finished the day in first after firing a 7-over par 295, one stroke better than second-place Glenville State. Glenville State's Hector Arriaga and West Liberty's Adam Gill shot 2-under 70 and are tied at the top of the leaderboard heading into the second round.
Griffin Hansberry and Mark Yan both shot a 4-over 76 in round one and sit tied for 31st with nine other players.
Mauricio Hernandez shot a 5-over 77 and is currently 42nd. David Razinskas and Eli Ropietski each recorded a 6-over 78 to tie for 52nd.
While the Mountain Cats will have some work to do on day two, their B team had a successful first 18 holes largely because of Smith, who helped it finish in a tie for third with Wheeling and California (Pa.) at 12-over par 300.
Dom Cerilli shot a 3-over 75 to take sole possession of 21st.
Giovanni Vezza is tied for 31st following a 4-over 76. Tyler Mocello resides in 42nd after shooting a 5-over 77. Parker Hilchey rounded out the B team's top five with a 10-over 82 that tied him for 83rd.
All 94 players will tee-off at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for the final round. It will be the final competitive round for Pitt-Johnstown ahead of the NCAA Atlantic/East Regionals that are set for May 7-9 at Sunnehanna Country Club in Johnstown.
