05/05/2011

After suffering a 4-2 loss in the opener, the Mountain Cat baseball team bounced back with a 5-1 win in the nightcap behind John Fees' (Carrolltown, Pa.) complete-game and Nick Barbera's (Harrisburg, Pa.) two RBI to earn the split in Thursday's WVIAC doubleheader at Davis & Elkins (WV) College. Pitt-Johnstown is now 18-24 overall and 14-14 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
In the opener, Davis & Elkins scored three runs in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and hand Pitt-Johnstown a 4-2 loss. Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) had two hits, while Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.) and Nate Sabados (DuBois, Pa.) each drove in a run. Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) suffered the loss and dropped to 6-5 after giving up all four runs in six innings of work. Shaulis also fanned six and waled two.
In game two, Fees did the work for the Mountain Cats. Fees allowed just one unearned run and scattered six hits in the complete-game effort. Barbera went 2-for-4 with a two run double, and Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.), Shaulis, and Vignero each had a pair of hits for Pitt-Johnstown.
With the split, Davis & Elkins is now 19-15 overall and 18-11 in the WVIAC Southern Division.
The Mountain Cats wrap-up the regular season with a WVIAC doubleheader against Bluefield State (WV) College on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium, before traveling to Beckley, W.Va. for the 2011 WVIAC Tournament from May 12-15.
