Baseball Splits with WV Wesleyan to Open WVIAC Play

The Mountain Cats secured a 1-0 win over West Virginia Wesleyan College in Friday's WVIAC opener in Fort Pierce, Fla., before the Bobcats earned the split with an 8-7 victory in game two. Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) threw a five-hit complete-game shutout to start the doubleheader, and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) and Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) each had two hits and an RBI in the nightcap. Pitt-Johnstown is now 5-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
In game one, Shaulis improved to 3-0 after scattering five hits an not allowing a run in the 1-0 complete-game effort. Shaulis, the current WVIAC Pitcher of the Week, also struck out four and walked two.
Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) had an RBI single, while Drew Ebersole (Martinsburg, Pa.), Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.), Rubal and Roy all collected hits.
In game two, the Mountain Cats had a runner on third base with one out in the seventh inning, but failed to get him home and suffered the 8-7 loss.
Rubal went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI, while Roy had two hits in three at-bats and drove in one. Martin doubled and had two RBI, and Shaulis added a triple.
Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) took the loss and slipped to 0-1 after allowing six runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings of work. Naggy fanned fanned five and walked one.
The Mountain Cats travel to West Virginia State University for a pair of WVIAC games on Tuesday, before opening the 2011 home schedule with a non-conference doubleheader against Lake Erie (OH) College on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
