04/30/2011

Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) hit a pair of homeruns, and Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) added a solo shot to lead the Mountain Cats to a 9-0 Senior Day win over Shepherd (WV) University in Saturday's first game of a WVIAC Northern Division doubleheader at the Point Stadium. Pitt-Johnstown completed the sweep and improved to 17-22 overall and 13-12 in conference play with a 5-1 win in game two.
In game one, after Shepherd loaded the bases and failed to score in the top of the first inning, Barbera led off the Mountain Cat first with a homer over the left centerfield wall to give Pitt-Johnstown a 1-0 lead.
The Mountain Cats added four more in the fourth. Westover belted a long two-run homerun to left center. Matt Whiteman (Irwin, Pa.) followed with an RBI groundout, and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) had a two-out RBI infield single to make it 5-0.
Westover's second homer of the day, a solo shot over the left field screen in the fifth, increased the lead to 6-0.
The Mountain Cats continued to pour it on. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Rubal and Barbera, and an infield single by Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) chased Barbera home to push it out to 9-0 in the sixth.
Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) did the rest on the mound for Pitt-Johnstown. Shaulis tossed a four-hit complete-game shutout to improve to 6-4. Shaulis fanned two and walked one.
Westover went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI, while Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) added three hits, including a double, and scored two runs. Barbera had a solo homerun and a double, drove in two and scored two, and Rubal had a pair of hits and two RBI for the Mountain Cats.
Paul Hvozdovic pitched six innings for the Rams and gave up all nine runs (7 earned). Hvozdovic slipped to 3-4.
In the nightcap, Shepherd loaded the bases on three straight singles in the top of the first and took a 1-0 lead on Nash Hutton's walk, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.), Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.), and Shaulis each drove in runs, and Martin scored on a wild pitch.
An unearned run on Martin's RBI single in the fourth set the final at 5-1.
Martin and Shaulis each had two hits and an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown, and Barbera collected two more hits and scored two more runs.
Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) evened his record at 2-2 after holding the Rams to just one run on seven hits in five innings. John Fees tossed the final two innings and struck out three.
Trevon McClain took the loss and dropped to 1-2 after giving up four runs (3 earned) on three hits in just one-third of an inning. Sean Wiles pitched 5.2 inning in relief and allowed just on run on five hits.
Shepherd fell to 12-20 overall and 7-16 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
