Baseball Splits at West Virginia State

03/16/2011

Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) belted two homeruns runs and drove in three to lead the Mountain Cats to a 4-1 win in Wednesday's WVIAC doubleheader opener at West Virginia State University. In game two, the Yellow Jacket erased a 3-1 deficit and went on to earn the split with a 7-4 victory. Pitt-Johnstown is now 6-8 overall and 2-2 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
After West Virginia State tied it at one in the bottom of the fourth inning, Westover led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer to left that put Pitt-Johnstown in front for good. Westover then connected on a two-run blast to center field in the sixth, before the Mountain Cats added another insurance run later in the inning in the 4-1 victory.
Westover went 3-for-4 with a pair of homeruns and three RBI. Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) and Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) each doubled, while Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) drove in Pitt-Johnstown's fisrt run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.) earned the win and improved to 2-1 after giving up one run on seven hits in five innings of work. Fees struckout two and walked two. Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) surrendered just one hit and faned two in two scoreless innings in relief to record his second save of the year.
In the nightcap, the Mountain Cats built a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, but West Virginia State answered with three in the bottom of the frame, and added a two-run homer in the fifth inning off the bat of Evan Sabo in the 7-4 win.
Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) had two hits, including a double, and Jeff Campbell (Brackenridge, Pa.) chipped in a two-run single.
Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) took the loss and fell to 0-2. Reighard allowed four runs (3 earned) on six hits in three innings. Reighard also struck out two and didn't allow a walk.
With the split, the Yellow Jackets are now 5-2 overall and 5-2 in the WVIAC Southern Division.
The Mountain Cats open the 2011 home schedule with a non-conference doubleheader against Lake Erie (OH) College on Saturday 2 p.m. and a WVIAC doubleheader against Bluefield State (WV) College on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Both doubleheaders will be played at Johnstown's Point Stadium.
