Mountain Cats Sweep Alderson-Broaddus

Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) had three hits and four RBI to lead the Mountain Cats to an 11-1 win over Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College in Saturday's WVIAC Northern Division opener at the Point Stadium. Pitt-Johnstown completed the sweep with a 17 hit attack, including four from Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.), in a 10-6 victory in game two. The Mountain Cats improved to 15-22 overall and 11-12 in the WVIAC North.
In game one, Alderson-Broaddus took a 1-0 lead with an unearned run on an error by Pitt-Johnstown third baseman Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) in the third inning.
The Mountain Cats plated two unearned runs in the fourth when Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) and Westover scored on a fly ball that was dropped by Derek Patsy in right field.
Pitt-Johnstown made it 6-1 with four more runs in the fifth. Barbera's sacrifice fly to center scored Joe Galbraith (Brookville, Pa.), and Martin had an RBI double down the left field line. Westover then singled to center to chase home Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) and Martin.
The Mountain Cats tacked on five more insurance runs in the sixth and went on to the 11-1 win.
Westover went 3-for-4 with four RBI, and Barbera drove in a pair. Martin had two hits, scored two runs and drove in one to lead Pitt-Johnstown.
Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) pitched a complete-game to improve to 5-4. Shaulis allowed one unearned runs on seven hits. He also fanned seven and didn't allow a walk.
Jeffrey Conley suffered the loss and dropped to 3-5 after surrendering six runs (4 earned) on seven hits in five innings.
In the nightcap, the Battlers jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead on back-to-back RBI singles by Patsy and Nick Canterbury. Martin's sac fly drove home Barbera in the bottom of the first to cut it to 2-1.
In the Pitt-Johnstown second Shaulis tripled home Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.), and Barbera followed with a single to right to score Shaulis. Martin's run producing base hit to left plated Barbera to make it 4-2.
Patsy led off the Alderson-Broaddus third with a homer to left, before the Battlers regained the lead with an RBI single and a two-out bases loaded walk to Conley.
The Mountain Cats battled back with two in the fourth. Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.) doubled and scored on Westover's triple to the gap in right center, and Westover raced home on a two-out wild pitch.
Two more runs on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and a wild pitch increased the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 8-5 after five innings.
The Mountain Cats made it 10-5 on Shaulis' two run single to center in the sixth to put the game away.
Barbera had four hits, scored three runs and drove in one, while Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.), Vignero, Westover, Campanella, and Shaulis all added a pair of hits. Martin chipped in a hit and three RBI for Pitt-Johnstown.
Paul Tunink (Indiana, Pa.) picked-up the win in relief to improve to 1-3. Tunink threw the final 4.1 innings and allowed just one run and scattered seven hits. Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) started and gave up five rusn on eight hits in 2.2 innings.
Colin Mitchell suffered the loss for Alderson-Broaddus in relief of Seth Martin.
The Battlers fell to 10-23 overall and 9-11 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
Pitt-Johnstown is breaking for finals week. The Mountain Cats will then celebrate Senior Weekend with a three-game WVIAC series against Shepherd (WV) University on Saturday and Sunday at the Point Stadium.
