04/02/2011

Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) each homered, and the Mountain Cats took advantage of seven errors to earn an 8-5 WVIAC win on Saturday at West Liberty (WV) University. Pitt-Johnstown improved to 10-11 overall and 6-3 in conference play. Game two of the doubleheader was postponed due to weather. The teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
West Liberty opened-up a 5-1 lead with five runs on five hits in the fourth inning off of Pitt-Johnstown starter John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.). The Mountain Cats answered with five runs in the fifth, highlighted by Martin's three-run homerun and Rubal solo shot, to retake the lead, 6-5. Pitt-Johnstown then added two insurance runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Martin and Rubal to set the final at 8-5.
Fees settled down and picked up the win to improve to 4-1. Fees allowed five runs on seven hits in six innings. Fees also struck out eight and didn't allow a walk. Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record his fourth save.
Martin went 3-for-4 with a homer and four RBI, while Rubal added two hits, including a homerun, two RBI and a two runs. Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) had a hit and scored two runs, and Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.) doubled.
