04/20/2011

Concord (WV) University used two runs in the sixth inning in an 8-7 win over the Mountain Cats in Wednesday's first game of a WVIAC doubleheader at the Point Stadium. However, Pitt-Johnstown did all its scoring in the second inning and got a two-hit, complete-game, shutout from Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) to earn the split with a 5-0 win in game two. The Mountain Cats are now 13-22 overall and 9-12 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
In game one, Concord jumped on Mountain Cat starter John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.) for three runs and five hits in the first inning. Nick Sydnor had an RBI double, and Kyle Webb followed with a two RBI single to right. Pitt-Johnstown answered with five in the bottom of the frame. Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) drove in two with a double down the right field line, and Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.), Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.), and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) all added an RBI.
Westover and Morrow had RBI singles in the second to push the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 7-3.
A run in the Concord third made it 7-4, before the Mountain Lions scored two more in the fourth.
Concord then tacked on two more in the sixth off of Pitt-Johnstown reliever Paul Tunink (Indiana, Pa.) to regain the lead for good at 8-7. Bret Blevins tripled to lead off the inning and scored on a fielder's choice, and Randy Beard put the Mountain Lions up after scoring on a passed ball.
Westover went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs, while Morrow had three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Martin had a hit and two RBI, and Rubal chipped in a base hit and drove in one for the Mountain Cats.
Dustin Nuckels got the win in relief of starter Jacob Mays after not allowing a run in 4.2 innings. Ryan Weatherholtz got the final two outs to record his first save of the season.
Fees pitched the first five innings for Pitt-Johnstown and gave up six runs (four earned) on eight hits, but did not figure in the decision. Tunink took the loss and fell to 0-3 after surrendering two runs on two hits in two innings.
In the nightcap, Pitt-Johnstown scored five in the second on two RBI singles by Nate Sabados (DuBois, Pa.) and Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) and an RBI groundout by Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.).
Naggy did the rest for the Mountain Cats. Naggy tossed a complete-game two hitter to improve to 1-2. Naggy fanned three and walked two.
Roy had two hits and two RBI, and Sabados drove in two. Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) also collected two hits for Pitt-Johnstown.
Keith Morrisroe and Blevins had Concord's lone hits. William Zuspan suffered the loss after giving up five runs on six hits in 3.2 innings.
With the split, Concord is now 15-22 overall and 8-13 in the WVIAC Southern Division.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Alderson-Broaddus (WV) College on Friday and Saturday for a three-game WVIAC Northern Division series, before breaking for finals week. The Mountain Cats will then celebrate Senior Weekend with a three-game WVIAC series against Shepherd (WV) University on April 30 and May 1 at the Point Stadium.
