Mountain Cats Deal Wheeling Jesuit 6-2 Loss

04/15/2011

Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) hit a three-run homer, and Pitt-Johnstown got a strong pitching performance from Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) in a 6-2 win over Wheeling Jesuit (WV) to open a three game WVIAC Northern Division series Friday night at the Point Stadium. The Mountain Cats snapped a nine-game losing streak and improved to 11-20 overall and 7-10 in conference play.
Mike Ludewig's towering homer over the left field screen gave Wheeling Jesuit a 1-0 first inning lead.
Pitt-Johnstown tied it with a run in the second. Westover singled and moved to second after a walk to Nate Sabados (DuBois, Pa.), before scoring on Zach Vignero's (Johnstown, Pa.) single to left. Pitt-Johnstown made it 2-1 in the third when Josh Campanella's (Allison Park, Pa.) sacrifice fly plated Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.).
Vignero's RBI double off the left field screen in the fifth made it 3-1 Mountain Cats.
The Cardinals got a run back in the sixth on an RBI ground out by Dominic San Filippo.
However, Westover belted a three-run homerun in the bottom of the frame to extend the Pitt-Johnstown lead to 6-2.
That's all Shaulis would need. The senior left-hander surrendered just two runs on two hits in 7.1 innings of work to even his record at 4-4. He also fanned six and walked four. Paul Tunink (Indiana, Pa.) tossed the final 1.2 innings and didn't allow a hit.
Vignero went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Westover had two hits, including a homer, and three RBI. Campanella added a hit and an RBI for the Mountain Cats.
With the loss, Wheeling Jesuit slipped to 10-16 overall and 8-10 in the WVIAC North.
The Mountain Cats wrap-up the series against Wheeling Jesuit with a doubleheader on Sunday, before hosting a conference doubleheader against Concord (WV) University on Tuesday. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
