Salem Int'l. Takes Two From Mountain Cats

Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) had three hits and four RBI to help the Mountain Cats battle back from a 6-0 deficit, but Salem International (WV) University scored a run in the top of the seventh to defeat Pitt-Johnstown in Wednesday's non-conference doubleheader opener at the Point Stadium. The Tigers completed a sweep with a 9-5 win in game two. Pitt-Johnstown fell to 10-15.
The Tigers opened-up a 6-0 lead in the fourth inning. The Mountain Cats answered with three in the bottom of the frame, before adding two in the fifth and one in the sixth on Scott Zubik's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) fielders choice ground out that scored Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) from third.
However, Salem International got doubles from A.J. Burlington and Jayson Barnes to go up 7-6.
Barbera went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) and Martin each added two hits. Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) and Zubik had an RBI apiece.
Mike Violi (Indiana, Pa.) took the loss after giving up one run on two hits in three innings of relief. Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) got the start and surrendered two runs on three hits in two innings.
In the nightcap, Pitt-Johnstown built a 3-0 on RBI from Roy and Barbera in the bottom of the fourth, but the Tigers scored three in the fifth, two in the sixth and four more in the seventh to seal the victory.
Zubik was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, and Morrow had two hits and drove in a run. Jeff Campbell (Brackenridge, Pa.) and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) had two hits apiece.
Rylan Schnably (Bedford, Pa.) took the loss in relief to fall to 0-1. Schnably gave up three runs on four hits in one inning. Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) started and didn't allow a run or a hit in three innings.
With the sweep Salem International improved to 8-21.
The Mountain Cats host a three-game WVIAC series against Seton Hill University on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium, before traveling to the University of Charleston (WV) for a WVIAC doubleheader on April 13.
