Mountain Cats Split Pair With #8 Mercyhurst

Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) belted a two-run homer, and Mountain Cat pitchers Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.) and Rylan Schnably (Bedford, Pa.) held Mercyhurst to just three hits in the 5-1 win to open a four-game non-conference series against NCBWA eighth-ranked Mercyhurst College, Saturday afternoon at the Point Stadium. Mercyhurst earned the split with a 15-1 win in the nightcap. Pitt-Johnstown is 9-8.
In game one, Morrow's two-run homer over the left field screen in the bottom of the first inning put the Mountain Cats up 2-0.
Mercyhurst cut the deficit in half in the fifth when Andrew Fitzpatrick scored from third on a wild pitch by Schnably.
Pitt-Johnstown answered with three in the bottom of the inning. Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) singled home Jake Warner (Dillsburg, Pa.), before Mike Palkovitz (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) drove in a pair with his third hit of the day to make it 5-1.
Fees and Schnably combined to hold the Lakers to one run on three hits. Fees started and tossed the first four innings and didn't allow a run on two hits to even his record at 2-2. Schnably picked his first save of the year save after pitching the final three innings. Schnably surrendered one one on just one hit.
Palkovitz went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Morrow hit a two-run homerun and scored two runs.
In game two, Mercyhurst jumped on Pitt-Johnstown starter Elliott Chamberlain (Six Mile Run, Pa.) for four runs in the first inning, before adding seven more in the second on their way to earning the split with a 15-1 victory.
The Lakers scored two runs on three Chamberalain wild pitches and got RBI singles from Zak Blair and Matt Adamczyk to go up 4-0 after first at-bat.
Morrow doubled for the Mountain Cats and drove in Warner in the bottom of the frame to cut it to 4-1, but Mercyhurst sent 11 men to the plate in the second inning and scored seven more runs to build the lead to 11-1 .
Pitt-Johnstown could never recover. The Lakers tacked on a run in the third and three more in the sixth to set the final at 15-1.
Warner had two hits and scored a run, and Morrow added two more hits and an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown.
Chamberlain took the loss and slipped to 1-1 ofter allowing 10 runs (8 earned) on six hits in 1.1 innings.
With the split, Mercyhurst is now 13-5.
The Mountain Cats wrap-up the four-game non-conference series against Mercyhurst on Sunday at noon at the Point Stadium, before traveling to Bluefield State (WV) College for a WVIAC doubleheader on Wednesday.
