Baseball Opens With Split at Shepherd

Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.), Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.), and Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) all belted homeruns to help the Mountain Cat baseball team open the 2011 season with a non-conference doubleheader split at Shepherd (WV) University on Saturday. After winning game one 10-2, Pitt-Johnstown suffered a 14-4 loss in the nightcap.
In the opener, Campanella went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBI, while Jeff Campbell (Brackenridge, Pa.) and Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) each added two hits. Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) drove in two. Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) picked-up the win after giving up two runs on four hits in four innings of work. Shaulis also fanned six and walked three. Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) pitched three shutout innings in relief to earn the save.
In game two, Shepherd opened-up a 9-1 lead after two innings and went on to the 14-4 win. Barbera was 3-for-3 with a homerun, while Westover was 2-for-3 with a homerun and two RBI. Rubal added two more hits for the Mountain Cats. Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs (7 earned) in one-plus innings.
The Mountain Cats finish the three-game series at Shepherd on Sunday, before traveling to Florida for the annual spring trip.
