Baseball Drops Twinbill at Virginia State

Nick Barbera (Harisburg, Pa.) homered and drove in three, but Atlantic Region No. 3 West Virginia State scored seven first-inning runs off of Pitt-Johnstown starter Kody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) and went on to defeat the Mountain Cats 16-8 in Sunday's twinbill opener in Institute, WV.  Barbera added two more hits and a pair of RBI in the nightcap, but the Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep with a 6-5 win.  Pitt-Johnstown is now 25-16. 
     In the opener, West Virginia State scored seven runs on seven hits and knocked outReighard after just 2/3 of an inning.  Reighard fell to 2-4. 
     Barbera went 2-for-4 with a double, a homerun and three RBI, while Drew Westover (Flinton, WV) aded two hits, including a double.  Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) also belted a solo homer. 
     In game two, the Mountain Cats held a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the seventh, but the Yellow Jackets battled back with four runs off of reliever Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) to earn the 6-5 victory. Moore took the loss and slipped to 2-2 after giving up four runs on six hits in 1.1 innings in relief of starterMatt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.).  Whiteman pitched the first four innings and allowed just one run on five hits. 
     Barbera finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Westover collected two more hits. 
     With the sweep, West Virginia State improved to 27-9. 
     The Mountain Cats travel to Davis & Elkins (WV) College on Saturday, before returning home to celebrate Senior Day against the Senators on Sunday, May 2 at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
