Mountain Cats Celebrate Senior Day With 11-6 Win Over Davis & Elkins

Pitt-Johnstown scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a tie game and earn an 11-6 Senior Day victory over Davis & Elkins (WV) College, Sunday afternoon at the Point Stadium.  Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) had three hits and three RBI to help the Mountain Cats close out the regular season with three straight wins and a 28-16 record.
     Prior to the game, Pitt-Johnstown recognized senior catcher Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.)and senior pitcher Tyler Zaremski (Bethel Park, Pa.).
      The Mountain Cats jumped on Davis & Elkins starter Jake Ross for three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) led off with a double and scored on Zach Martin's (Irwin, Pa.) one-out single to right.  Westover followed with an RBI double off the top of the left field screen, and Justin Demek's (Cabot, Pa) sacrifice fly drove home Martin.
     The Senators scored two unearned runs in the fourth on Eric Doyle's single up the middle, but Martin'ssingle to left in the fifth scored Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) to make it 4-2.
     Davis & Elkins cut it to 4-3 with a run in the seventh.  However, Martin's sacrifice fly and Westover'sinfield single each drove in runs in the bottom of the inning for Pitt-Johnstown to push the lead to 6-3.
     Once again, the Senators battled back with three runs in the eighth off of Mountain Cat reliever Evan James (Harrison City, Pa.) to knot it at six.
     The Mountain Cats put it away with five in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by Matt Staub's (Latrobe, Pa.) two-RBI triple off of the left center field wall.
     Westover went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Martin added two hits and two RBI.  Staub had two hits and two RBI, and Rubal and Matt Richardson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) each had a pair of hits and an RBI. Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) also collected two hits in the 15-hit Mountain Cat attack.
     James picked-up his first collegiate win despite giving up three runs in an inning of work.  Matt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.) got the start and surrendered two unearned on five hits in four innings.  Whitemanalso struck out three and didn't allow a walk.
     Davis & Elkins' season came to an end with a 25-24 overall record.
     Pitt-Johnstown opens the 2010 WVIAC tournament against West Virginia State University on Thursday at noon at the Point Stadium.
