Mountain Cats Hold Off Concord in WVIAC Tournament

Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) belted a two-run homer and Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.)pitched 1.2 innings scoreless innings to close out an 8-6 victory over Concord (WV) University and extend the season, Saturday afternoon in the 2010 WVIAC Tournament at Johnstown's Point Stadium.  Pitt-Johnstown improved to 30-17.
     The Mountain Cats opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) walked to lead off and came around to score on back-to-back singles by Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) and Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) to make it 1-0.  Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) followed three batters later with a two out single to right field to drive in Westover and Demek.
     Pitt-Johnstown made it 4-0 in its next at-bat when Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) came around to score from first on Matt Staub's (Latrobe, Pa.) double to left center.
     Concord got back in it with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by WVIAC Player of the Year Greyson Schram's long two-run homer to left center field, and an unearned run in the sixth to tie it at four.
     The Mountain Cats used a Demek lead-off walk to regain the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the inning. Demek walked, moved to second on Drew Shaulis' (Somerset, Pa.) sacrifice bunt and scored on anotherRoy base hit to right field with two outs.
     Westover's two-run blast over the right center field fence in the seventh extended the lead to 7-3.
     Concord scored two in the eighth to cut it to 7-6, but left the bases loaded, but Rubal's run scoring sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame pused it back out to a two-run lead.
     Naggy pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the victory and help the Mountain Cats advance to take on West Virginia State University on Saturday at 7 p.m.
     Roy went 3-for -4 with three RBI, while Westover had two hits and a pair of RBI.
     Matt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.) pitched six innings and surrendered four runs (3 earned) on four hits to improve to 4-1.  Naggy allowed just one hit and fanned two to collect his first save of the year.
     Keith Morrisroe and Donovan Huffer each had two hits for Concord, and Ian Humphrey drew in two runs apiece.
     Chastin Akers took the loss and dropped to 7-3, for Concord, now 29-9.
