Baseball Sweeps #32 WV State to Open Season

The cold weather didn't bother the Mountain Cat baseball team as Pitt-Johnstown opened the 2009 season with an 8-3 and 6-4 sweep over College Baseball Newspaper #32 West Virginia State University, Friday afternoon in some of the recorded games played in February at Johnstown's Point Stadium.  Matt Petrowsky (Johnstown, Pa.) hit a pair of two run homeruns in his first two at-bats in the opener, and Matt Hanley (Delmont, Pa.) hammered a grand slam in the nightcap.  
     In game one, the Mountain Cats jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and cruised to the 8-3 win.  Petrowsky's first two run homer over the left-center field wall scored Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) to give Pitt Johnstown a quick 2-0 lead.  The Mountain Cats added five more runs in the bottom of the second inning.  Josh Campanella's (Allison Park, Pa.) single plated Barbera, before Petrowsky belted his second two-run homerun to left-center field.  Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) followed five hitters with another two-run blast, this time over the screen in left field.  Pitt-Johnstown added another run in the fifth inning to go up 8-0.  West Virginia State scored one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to set the final al 8-3. 
     Petrowsky finished 2-for-2 with four RBI, three runs and two walks, while Barbera went 1-for-2 with two runs scored.  Sophomore right hander Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) gave up one hit and struckout one in four innings of work to earn the win.  Three other Mountain Cats combined to toss the final three innings. 
     In game two, Hanley's grand highlighted a five-run third inning that erased a 2-0 deficit and put the Mountain Cats in the lead for good.  Michael Deleeuw and Chad Chambers hit back-to-back solo homers to start the fourth inning for the Yellow Jackets, but Pitt-Johnstown added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to complete the sweep. 
     Hanley finished 1-for-3 with the grand slam, while Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) went 3-for-3 with a run, and Campanella added two hits in two at-bats and a run for the Mountain Cats.  Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) surrended all four of West Virginia State's runs in two innings pitched, but collected the win in relief of starter Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.), who pitched the first two innings.  Eric Faint (Johnstown, Pa.)tossed a perfect seventh inning to earn his first save of the year. 
     Pitt-Johnstown travels to the University of Charleston (WV) for doubleheaders against Mercyhurst College on Saturday, Feb. 21 and Charleston on Sunday, Feb. 22.
