Baseball Drops Pair to Open Season

03/06/2010

After having several games postponed due to weather, Head Coach Todd Williams and the Mountain Cat baseball team had to wait until the annual Spring Trip to Fort Pierce, Fla. to open the season. Unfortunately, Pitt-Johnstown suffered a 8-0 loss to East Stroudsburg University and a 5-3 setback in 12 innings to Wilmington (DE) University on Saturday.
In game one, East Stroudsburg broke open a scoreless game with six runs in the fifth inning, before adding single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat the Mountain Cats 8-0. Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) doubled and walked for Pitt-Johnstown. Junior right-hander Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.) took the loss after surrendering five runs (3 earned) and striking out six in 4.1 innings of work. Jeremy Gugliotti combined with Colin Kelly and Mike Muglia to earn victory for East Stroudsburg in the seven-hit shutout.
In Saturday's second game, Wilmington erased a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth, before plating two in the top of the 12th to deal Pitt-Johnstown a 5-3 loss. The Mountain Cats scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning and added one in the sixth on Drew Shaulis' (Somerset, Pa.) RBI single. Matt Whiteman (North Huntingdon, Pa.) went 2-for-6 with two doubles to lead Pitt-Johnstown. Joe Novotny (Johnstown, Pa.) took the loss in relief after giving up three earned runs on six hits in four innings. Staub got the start and pitched six innings, giving up just one run on five hits. Staub also fanned three.
