Mountain Cats Drop Two In WVIAC Opener

Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) collected five hits, but Seton Hill University used a six-run fifth inning in the opener and a 12-run fourth inning in game two to sweep the Mountain Cats 9-6 and 20-3 in Saturday's WVIAC Northern Division opening doubleheader at the Point Stadium. Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
In game one, Seton Hill went up 2-0 with single runs in the first and third innings, but Pitt-Johnstown answered with a run in the bottom of the third inning and three in the fourth to go up 4-2. Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) led off the fourth inning with a solo homerun. Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) singled and Seth Roy (Beford, Pa.) doubled, before Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) singled up the middle to plat Demek and Roy.
However, the Griffins scored six runs, including five unearned on three Mountain Cat errors, in the top of the fifth to put the game away.
Shaulis was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) had three hits and an RBI. Martin, Staub and Roy had two hits apiece.
Cody Reighard (Salix, Pa.) took the loss to fall to 1-1 after giving up six runs (1 earned) on six hits in three innings in relief of starter Kaleb Fleck (Claysburg, Pa.). Fleck pitched the first four innings and surrendered three runs (2 earned) on five hits. Fleck also struck out seven in the no-decision.
In the nigthcap, Pitt-Johnstown led 2-1 ofter two innings, but Seton Hill's Pat Trettel belted a pair of long grand slams in the Griffins' 12-run fourth inning to break the game open.
Martin added three more hits for Pitt-Johnstown, while Staub was 2-for-2 with a double. Demek and Roy each had an RBI for the Mountain Cats.
Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) dropped to 1-1 after giving up 10 runs on 10 hits in three-plus innings of work.
Trettel, who was 4-for-4 with two grand slams and nine RBI in game two, finished the day 6-for-10 with 12 RBI.
With the sweep, the Griffins improved to 11-8 overall and 2-0 in the WVIAC North.

Pitt-Johnstown will wrap-up its four-game WVIAC Northern Division series against Seton Hill with a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Point
