Mountain Cats Split With Seton Hill

03/21/2010

Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) had two hits and Matt Staub (Latrobe, Pa.) drove in three to lead the Mountain Cats to a 7-4 victory in the opener, but Seton Hill University used a 10-run fifth inning to defeat Pitt-Johnstown 13-6 in Sunday's nightcap at the Point Stadium. The Mountain Cats are 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
In the opener, the Mountain Cats erased a 4-0 deficit with two runs in the third inning and five in the fifth to earn the 7-4 victory. Mark Henry's three-run homerun to left center field in the third inning put the Griffins up 4-0. The Mountain Cats added two in the bottom of the frame on Barbera's RBI single and Staub's sacrifice fly.
Pitt-Johnstown put the game away with five in the fifth inning. Staub's one-out single to center scored Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) and Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) to tie the score at four, before Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.), Dan Mangini (Lower Burrell, Pa.) and Justin Demek (Cabot, Pa.) collected an RBI each to set the final at 7-4.
Barbera went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, while Staub was 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) improved to 2-0 after pitching the first 5.2 innings and giving up four runs on five hits. Shaulis also fanned nine and walked two. Mike McDermott (Nanty-Glo, Pa.) tossed the final inning and a third and didn't allow a hit to pick up his second save.
In game two, Seton Hill scored 10 runs in the fifth inning to erase a 5-3 deficit, before going on to the 13-6 win.
Pitt-Johnstown took a 2-0 after one inning, but the Griffins tied it in the top of the second. The Mountain Cats answered with two more in the bottom of the frame on Barbera's RBI single and Shaulis' RBI double to left field.
Pat Trettel led off the top of the third with a solo homer down the right field line to get Seton Hill to within 4-3, but Matt Whiteman's (North Huntingdon, Pa.) inside-the-park homerun off the right field fence in the bottom of the fourth pushed the Mountain Cats' lead to 5-3.
However, the Griffins exploded four 10 runs (5 unearned) in the top of the fifth, highlighted by Tom Deangelis' grand slam to left center, to put the game out of reach.
Barbera, Whiteman and Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) all had two hits for the Mountain Cats.
Staub suffered the loss and fell to 0-1 after surrendering eight runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.
With the split, Seton Hill is now 12-9 overall and 3-1 in the WVIAC North.
Pitt-Johnstown will host a doubleheader against Fairmont State (WV) University at the Point Stadium on Wednesday at 1 p.m., before traveling to Shepherd (WV) University for a four-game WVIAC series on Saturday and Sunday.
